The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Local print spooler hangs on multiple computers on a Microsoft Network

Tags: spooler, print
I have a puzzling issue with several users on our network.  We commonly have an issue where a computer will lockup applications and is fixed by stopping and restarting the local print spooler.  This primarily happens when a program is going to print to one of the network printers.  This does not happen to every user on our network and it happens to some more than others.  This seems to have happened around the same time we upgraded to AutoCad 2007, however the issue has happened to people that do not have CAD and it has happened to people that are not running CAD at the time.

Do you activate DEP (Data Execution Protection). If yes, disable DEP.

This seems to help alot of spooler issues...

Have you tried to enable printer spooling on the workstations to that specific printer?  It should be within the properties of the printer.

The lockups happen intermittently and not to any specific printer.  It could lock up while printing to a PDF file, to a plotter or a HP Laser.  All the printers connect to our print server so the local computer's connection is through the print server.

Have you checked the error logs to see if Windows was able to log the issue causing the problem?

02.08.2007 at 11:46AM PST, ID: 18496551
On the most recent issue the event logs for applications showed several application hangs.

Source: Apphang
Category: (101)
Event ID: 1002
Most of these hangs say they are from acad.exe, winword.exe, and some programs.  the trend is that when programs begin to hang the print spooler needs to be restarted.  We stop the spooler service and half way though the stop it hangs and takes a few minutes to stop.  Then at the end an error pops up that says: "Could not stop the print spooler, Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."  Then stopping and restarting it again is done again and works.  Now the programs are free and not longer hanging until this issue happens again.

Another event error is:
Source: Service Control Manager
Category: None
Event ID: 7011
Description: Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the Spooler service

Well that thread is referring to Server2000.  We are on Server2003 Standard for our Print server that also serves as a data server.   the issue happens to user computers and causes us to restart the local print spooler.  I will try some of the steps on that thread and see what happens over the next few days.

This is weird. I have the same problem since a few weeks. This makes me wondering if it could be related to a MS update? I'm looking further into this.

You can add one more to the list of people experiencing this.  It began yesterday here for me as well at random times the spooler service stops responding.

Meanwhile I have been able to solve this problem. In my network this was caused by new drivers from HP for their printers behaving erratic. I solved it by using older drivers and for the latest printers even using drivers from older compatible models (e.g. use 4200 drivers for 4350's), as no older drivers where available.
It seems to  me like all the fancy stuff (popups with printer status, toner levels, etc...) they recently added is causing this. I'm not 100% sure about this, but in the past I hated Epson for this and now HP is doing the same. I liked the clean HP drivers.
Also, the new universal driver did not resolve this. So: start hunting for older drivers and give it a try.
