Question

network folders/network drives problem for large files

Asked by: k61824

Setup:
2 computers (A and B;both running Windows XP/ in the same workgroup/subnet) connected to the same switch (D-Link DGS-1008D);

problem:
2 files on the folder in A shared in the same folder:  (without loss of generality) 1 large  (~1GB) and 1 small(~30MB) ; identical permissions.
have problems accessing large files through "my network palces" (or network drives); small files goes through no problem.

Steps to reproduce the problem:  if I attempt to copy the large file from A to B using B, error message comes up (no error comes up when I copy the smaller file).  if I attempt to copy either file from A to B using A, no error comes up.

error message:  "Access is denied"

I would like to have the steps to fix the problem described above.  Thank you very much

Replace network card in B

by: ajayprkPosted on 2007-02-08 at 00:09:33ID: 18491933

as a first step, reboot both machines in safe mode with networking and then repeat your step.

We shall take it on from there

Cheers!

What would you like me to change in Safe Mode with networking?  The same problem seem to persist.

further details of the problem:
using a 3rd computer I have located the problem seems to originate at the folder sharing of A (if the large file is at B (or computer C) I can use A (or C if it in in B; using B if the file is on C) to access it)

reminder that only files of large size is affected

update:  If I create a user and try the same trick, it miraculously works, so now I believe it is some sort of per-user setting (I want to fix this because of some large number of programs that I direct to the currently problematic folder)

n that case it can be a user profile issue. What kind of user profiles do you have... local or roaming?

I am in a workgroup/admin account, if that's the concern (by create another user I have tried create another admin; also the problem account is the first account(admin as well))

update:  by "I create a user and try the same trick"  I mean the following steps:

1) create an admin
2) create a folder on that new admin's desktop folder
3) share that folder
4) move the test files into the folder
5) try to access the files remotely

by: k61824Posted on 2007-02-09 at 16:43:39ID: 18505571

I found the solution to my problem:

Steps:
1) turn off simple file and folder sharing;
2) copy the set of the permissions on thefolder that does not have the problem (other drives/the folder that the user has no problem in sharing), to the folders that does have the problem
3) apply the changes

by: k61824Posted on 2007-02-09 at 16:50:51ID: 18505596

When I refer to permission, I refer to the [local] access permission (security tab) on folder properties after simple file/folder sharing is disabled (it has a different set of parameters if I enable simple folder sharing)
