Question

Both computers connected to same wireless network --- next step share files.

Asked by: rowby

Hi
I have a laptop (Vista Home), and a Desktop (XP) that I got to connect to the same wireless connection.

But I can't figure out the next stop -- for the laptop to copy some files from the desktop.

(I can only imagine how many times this question must have been asked and answered here!)

Thanks

The solution I would use is to follow these steps.

1:  Take a note of the iP address of the desktop (Right click on network connections and click on status)

2:  On the laptop Click on Start:>Run> and then type \\ipaddress of desktop (for eg 192.168.0.1)\c$

3:  This will map a network drive to the C Drive of the desktop.

4:  Double click on the network drive and got to Documents and settings>The user folder of the desktop for eg administrator or user name> into the desktop folder.  From there you should see the files that are currently on the PC's desktop.

You must make sure that you go into the users folder of the user who would normally log on to the PC who has the desktop you want to copy files from.

Hope this is what you want.

Matt

Don't forget to allow sharing on the drives you are connecting to!

Hi Masqueraid

Here's the message I am getting (from Windows Vista,Diagnostics message on my laptop, which I am trying to conntect via the same wireless connection) to my desktop's IP 169.254.36

169.254.36.95 is not set up to establish a connection port "File and printer sharing (SMB) with this comuter.

THe desktop hard  drive is set to "Share this folder"

Any thoughts regarding the WIndows Networks Diagnostics message??

OK forgive me if I assume you have no knowledge of networking

First step is to make part of the desktop accessible to other users
You can create a dedicated shared area on the PC so that this area and no other is available to a networked computer

Microsoft have a tutorial that can take you though this stage:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040

Once that is set up, reboot the desktop and then reboot the laptop.  Vista may automatically find the shared folder and make all the setting changes you need.

Have a try at this first and then post back how you are getting on.

Hi All, including Masqueraid,

I have to leave for a client and will resume on Friday.

Then I will have plenty of time to use all of your suggestions.
