The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Accessing FTP server on IIS
Tags: ftp, server, iis
Hi there,

I have just set up FTP server on my laptop using IIS. I think I may have got it working but cant be sure.  I have renamed by FTP site name to myLaptop and the port setting is the standard 21.

When I open IExplorer, to access the FTP server via ftp://myLaptop and I get an error as "Windows cannot access this folder.  Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder.  Details: The server name or address could not be resolved"

However if I use ftp://<ipaddress> then it is fine.  Assuming my ip address is 10.1.1.1, then my question is can someone from another network via the internet access my ftp server by typing ftp://10.1.1.1

Hope someone can shed some light.  I just basically need a folder on my laptop to be access by friends who can copy stuff from me.

cheers

>>Assuming my ip address is 10.1.1.1, then my question is can someone from another network via the internet access my ftp server by typing ftp://10.1.1.1

is this your LAN address,i mean if you are behind a router and want to serve your files with FTP you need to:
1) make this 10.1.1.1 LAN address static for your LAN.
2) From the router options,forward desired ports(ex: 21) to your computer (10.1.1.1)
3) your friends can now connect to your FTP server by using the routers WAN IP Adress
4) your friends who are already in the same LAN with you can connect to your FTP server by using your computers LAN address(10.1.1.1)

if this is your WAN address (connected directly) the address is just 10.1.1.1

Hi thanks for the quick reply.

Ok my setup is such.  i dont have a router.  however I have a cable modem that is hooked up to a wireless access point. and my laptop is connected to the internet thru this wireless access point.  which i assume the ip address for the access point is the default gateway address.  am i right to assume this?

so can people connect my laptop thru the wireless access point?

and yes the 10.1.1.1 is my lan address and yes it is kind of static as i have only one laptop/pc at home.

Are you going to allow anonymous access? I would not suggest doing that as it is a security risk. You need to:

1). Turn off anonymous access.
2). Create a virtual directory pointing to the folder in question.
3). Create a user with the same name as the virtual directory and set a password which they will use to access.
4). Assign the user with full access to that folder.

Obviously port forward the port your going to use, (default 21), to your computer from your router.

From there, you can use an authenticated FTP session rather than just opening up your FTP server to the world so it can be used and abused :)

is it a wireless access point or a wireless router?

well, 10.1.1.1 is a private ip, so your modem is doing some sort of NAT, there for you will have to log into the modem config page, and forward the port 21 to your local ip (10.1.1.1)
then the next thing you (and your friends) will need to know is the public ip of your modem
(I use dyndns at www.dyndns.com (free)) and one of thier update clients, then all your friends will need to know is your "psuedo" domain name
and they will be able to ftp into your ftp service
make sure to open the prot on your firewall also

02.08.2007 at 09:47AM PST, ID: 18495610
as you have a lan ip, it means you are behind some device that is doing some NAT.So you need to forward the desired ports to your local IP address. Once after you do this,if there isn't anything else blocking your ports(like a firewall posted above) you are good to go. Issues about security and dynamic dns mentioned above are also important once after you setup the server.
good luck.

Hi there,

I am a bit confused here.  I dont have a router or a wireless router.  I only have a wireless access point that is connected to the modem.  I am not sure how to access the settings of the modem but I do know how to access the settings of the Access Point thru the D-Link Access Point manager software.

I understand that my 10.1.1.1 IP is a private address and I need to find out the IP address of the modem.  Is this right? when I do ipconfig the following is my the result.  The 10.1.1.1 IP address which I cited in my question was just an example.  Below is my true addresses.

Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 202.171.179.221
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.224
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 202.171.179.193

So the question is ..... does the Default Gateway IP address represents the Access Point IP address or does it represent my modem IP address?  How would I do about setting my modem to allow port 21 to be open?

thanks

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 202.171.179.221
this represents a public ip address, therefore you should not need to forward any ports, and since you can access it by ip, indicates the prot is open
]the issue is you are using your isp's dns and of course they dont have "mylaptop" in their dns,
again check out www.dyndns.com
set up an account (free), and then set up one of thier software clients (this will up date dyndns automatically) and then you should be able to access your ftp server by using the "psuedo domain name" that dyndns gives you
also try accessing your ftp server using localhost, instead of mylaptop

02.09.2007 at 03:40PM PST, ID: 18505385
Hmmm, I didnt know that my IP address is public.  maybe that explains why I could download bittorent files without forwarding my port.

Yes thats is true that I can access my ftp server by using ftp://202.171.179.221.  But when I get my friend to access my ftp server by typing ftp://202.171.179.221, they cant get thru.  Quite frankly, I am not woried about using myLaptop to access the ftp server.

any clues??? Thanks

I did check out dyndns but it doesnt seem to work.  Will give it another go later.

"Hmmm, I didnt know that my IP address is public"
there are pubic ranges and private ranges (these ranges can not be out on the internet, and are reserved for use on private networks)
I just tried to ping your address, and request times out
what make/model is your modem?
