Internet VPN connection to small private network

We have installations consisting of industrial control equipment - logic controllers, motion controllers, and windows xp computers - all networked together using 192.168.100.xxx addresses. Usually 5 or 6 units. These are located in a client's facility. They want us to be able to connect over the internet to these machines for troubleshooting. Their standard solution is to install a computer ion their company network and then allow us to vpn to that computer. This computer would have 2 network cards and this would allow us to use VNC or PC Anywhere to connect to our equipment. We would like to be able to connect directly (at least virtually) to the units in our network just as if we were right there connected straight to the network. Our client is worried about exposing their network. What possibilities exist to accomplish this? Hardware firewall, router or brdige? I set up a wireless peer to peer network at home so family members could access internet and that probably defines the extent of my network experience.
