lab server login too slow

Tags: too, profiles, roaming, login
I have 22 xp pro machines in a lab connecting to a lab server with roaming profiles. Every time a user tries to login to thier profile it takes at least 3 minutes for his profile to come up. Can anyone give me any suggestions. The server is Server 2003, 2 gig ram, p4 3ghz.

Most common cause for this is incorrectly configured DNS. Specifically an external DNS server IP, such as the ISP's, has been added to the workstation's network adapter configuration.

-The server's NIC should be configured with a static IP, the Internet router as the gateway, and only the server itself as the DNS server. Do not use an ISP DNS server here
- ==>Each workstation should be configured using DHCP (obtain and IP address and DNS automatically) or if configured with static addresses; a static IP in the same subnet as the server, same subnet mask as the server, the gateway pointing to your Internet router, and the DNS server pointing ONLY to the server/domain controller. Again do not put an ISP's DNS server here
-In the DNS management console under Administrative tools, right click on the server name and choose properties. On the Forwarders tab add your ISP's DNS servers
-If the workstations are using DHCP, open the DHCP management console on the server under Administrative tools and click on the server name to expand it, click on the scope to expand it, right click on scope options and choose configure options. On the general tab add the Internet router's IP in #003 router, the server's IP in #006 DNS Servers, and the domain name and suffix under #015 such as mydomain.local
-If  DHCP is enabled on the router, rather than the server, it should really be disabled on the router and configured on the server. Enabling DHCP on the server assists with dynamic updates to DNS for older clients, allows for central management, and far more scope options.
-The DHCP client service should be running on servers and workstations even where you are not using DHCP assignments. The DHCP client service controls the dynamic DNS updates

If the problem is with the size of the profile rather than DNS then use folder redirection to that "My Documents" is not stored as part of the profile. See http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/w2k3/gp/group_policy_folder_redirect.htm

Also keep the desktop clear.

Why would the size of the profile matter? What is a desent size for a profile?

With roaming profiles the  profile is copied to/from the server at logon/logoff. The bigger the profile is the longer this takes. By default "My Documents" is part of the profile so if user have 3Gb of "My Documents" thats 3Gb than needs to cross the network each time.

By re-directing "My Documents" the documents are permanently stored on the server - so they don't need to be copies back and forth.

The same applies to the desktop, the more you have on it the longer it takes to pull it from the server at logon and save it back at logoff.

DNS and extra large profiles would be my first guesses.

But, Domain time variations could also cause the problem. An auditting tool to check domain time is called: Domain Time II from symetricom's website. It is a free utlity to check and see if you are within syncronization of the domain controller. Problems associated with time should be seen in the event logs as Win32time events.

Make sure in DNS the zones you dont have a '.'  this means your server thinks its a root server which you dont want it to.
If you do have a '.' delete it
