The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Can't see computer on network

Tags: Microsoft, Windows Vista, Home
Need some advice on security/sharing . . .

Current setup -

Main office with WSB2k3 and 5 workstations on domain "Domain1"

Satellite office with one Vista Business machine (Comp1).  This machine was originally at the main office and on the domain.  Current network properties are still set to Domain1 and the user uses his domain profile.  User also connects to the main office with Windows VPN.

Satellite office has another machine - Vista Home (Comp2).  This machine has NOT been at the main office and network properties are set to "WORKGROUP".

Satellite office is connected to DSL.  DSL Router provides DHCP for the two computers in the satellite office.

GOAL:

Owner of company (Comp1) wants to be able to see shares on Comp2 and vice versa.  Neither computer has firewall turned on.  Comp2 can see Comp1 and shares fine - even able to save files to shares as permitted.  Comp1 can NOT see Comp2 at all.  In the "Network" tree both computers are shown but if you click on "Comp2" you get a message that network resource cannot be found, check spelling (something to that effect).  I can NOT ping Comp2 - either by name or by ip address.  I've set shares on both computers.

IP addresses:

Comp1 - 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0/192.168.1.254
Comp2 - 192.168.1.3/255.255.255.0/192.168.1.254

.254 is the DSL Router's internal address.
