The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Multiple UNCs on a single server

Asked by JeremyHigginson in Miscellaneous Networking, Microsoft Access Database, Computer Servers

I have an application (built in MS Access) that is installed in several client locations. It is two-tier, with the back end database residing on a shared server. In each site, the UNC address of the server is different which means that (to simplify installation) I have to pre-configure each version of the front end application to point at linked tables on the appropirate server location.

The only ways I can think of doing this are:
1 to set up a computer or NAS device on my network and give the device the name of the server's UNC (e.g. "HCAS"), and then make a folder available as a share (e.g. D:\Data\subfolder\subfolder shared as CED), allowing me to link the tables as "\\HCAS\CED\Access-Data.mdb".
2 to change the name of the device between each configuration and relink the tables (this is tedious) or to acquire a range of cheap NAS devices, and name each one with the appropriate server name (expensive but speedy).

Is there any way in which I can use a single device (PC or NAS) and make several UNCs available at the same time? I would expect a full blown Windows Server setup to do this, because (I think) you can set up several file shares independently of each other but on a single device and attach to each one with a different UNC. But of course I don't want to go to the trouble of buying and installing a Windows Server platform.Start Free Trial
