You can utilize a variety of routers for this application if you load them with DDWRT firmware as it will enable a variety of wireless configurations including client. My personal favorite is the Linksys wrt54gl.

Using an access-point as network card for laptop
I would like to use an access-point with removable antennas and possibilities for modifications as a network card for my laptop. With this solution, I can place the access-point in a better place for recievement using a network cable.
This is just some ideas.
