The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Isolating two networks using a Negear router

Asked by lfrancisco in Miscellaneous Networking, Network Routers

Tags: , ,

Hello,

I want to build a test environment (TEST) and isolate it from our production environment (PRODUCTION).  I have a Netgear WGT624 router and I'm hoping that the built-in firewall capabilities of this unit can isolate the two environments.  However, I want to be able to access the Internet from TEST.  I've opened up port 80 on the Netgear to allow HTTP traffic from TEST.  DHCP and wireless has been disabled on this device.

So here's how I configured the Netgear:

Internet
     |
PRODUCTION
     |
WAN IP of Netgear - 10.1.17.254 (LAN IP from PRODUCTION)
     |
LAN IP of Netgear - 192.168.1.1
     |
TEST

I've built this setup and everything seems to work fine.  I can get to the Internet just fine from TEST and computers on PRODUCTION cannot access anything on TEST.  But here's my concern:

The domain controllers in TEST will be named the same as in PRODUCTION.  Once I attach the DC to TEST, will PRODUCTION start freaking out?  I did a test by connecting a PC in TEST with the same computer name as an existing PC in PRODUCTION and it seems ok.  If I enable DHCP in TEST, will PRODUCTION PCs start pulling TEST IPs?  Are there any other drawbacks by doing it this way?

I was able to ping PRODUCTION PCs from TEST which raises some concerns for me.

Thanks!

Louie
