The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

strange network problem

Asked by seth2740 in Miscellaneous Networking

I have a very strange problem and it's really aggravating.

I have computerA, computerB, notebookA and notebookB.

this problem started a couple months ago when suddenly my internet connection is gone, i can't ping the modem and all 3 lights on the modem are solid green.

About  a month ago it was doing this repeatedly where it would lose the connection, then the modem would go through a reset cycle.  it behaved after the 4th or 5th reset.  I called verizon and they did a line test and found nothing wrong.  since the modem was resetting by itself, they said it could be the modem.  i had it over 5 years so they sent me a new one.

i got the new modem configured and everything was fine - for a couple weeks.  then the problem started again.  this time i disconnect computerA and powercycle the modem and it's fine.  about 10 sec after i connect computerA, boom! connection gone and can't ping the modem.  the nic is integrated so i went out and bought a gb card.  that worked for a little while then boom! connection gone again.  i changed cables, got a new gb hub - after a couple weeks the problem occured again.  note that after connecting notebookA and notebookB it was fine; computerB wasn't on.

i then blew away windows on that box and loaded linux.  after about 10 days or so, boom! connection gone, can't ping modem, no internet.  i even changed the gateway to an unused address and still failed.  i removed computerA, moved all my files to computerB and started using that as my file server.

now computerA is gone (at least off and disconnected), everything was working fine.  then about 2 days ago out of nowhere boom! connection gone again.  now i'm really upset.  i disconnected everything and it was fine after reseting the modem.  as soon as i connected notebookA (vista), it was gone.  after a half hour or so it was working fine.  on notebookB (XP) i was running vmware player for an old windows 2000 vm and as soon as that came up, boom! internet gone again.  if i disabled the bridged network in the vm it's ok; as soon as i connected it in vmware, it was gone.

i've replaced hardware (just about everything), changed the OS, multiple machines...i have no idea what is going on.  anyone got any ideas? this is totally aggravating; can't find common denominator here.
