Question

Vista laptop (sometimes) won't connect to the internet

Asked by: InteractiveMind

Hello,

Here's the situation:

* We have a router with several laptops connecting wirelessly.
* Everything has worked great over the past year.
* Over the past couple of weeks however, I (but no one else) have been having intermittent problems;
* the network claims to connect to the network (an 'unidentified network'), but there's no internet.
* Then again, some days it works fine (like right now). Occasionally a reboot fixes it, and other times it sometimes randomly connects on its own accord.
* My laptop is a 1 year old Compaq with Vista Home Premium.
* By the looks of the ipconfig/all output (see below), it's not connecting properly...
* It's certainly not a signal problem,
* and I don't have a firewall.
* A couple of days before this problem started, everyone was unable to connect to the network - it claimed that the security settings had changed (though they hadn't). So we had to delete and reconnect to the network to fix that. (I'm doubtful this is related though, as no one else is now having my problem.)

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

You tried already a system restore? You can reset your pc to a previous point. (When the connection worked)

TC/IP settings.
Did you try a reinstall of your driver? This could fix your problem.

Sorry for the delay. According to ipconfig, it's set to automatic IP. I also tried reinstalling the driver (for the wireless NIC), but no luck. Any other ideas? Thank you very much

Hello

Try to set wireless router "Preamble Type" to Long Preamble Only, and not "Auto".
Set also your Wireless Laptop "BSS PLCP Header" to "Long", and not "Auto"

Good Luck

Just go to your wireless device properties, at advance tab-menu you will see a selection option of "Long"? "Short"? and "Auto"!, just select "Long" as the default.

And if you see a selection option of "Aggressive"? "Conservative"? and "Moderate"!, choose "Aggressive"
that is for roaming tendency.

Then about rate of data speed, try to set it to "Use best rate", and try not to set it to a larger data speed rate, because it may corrupt your connectivity.

Hmm, I've searched through every tab on my modems page (at least twice), and have been unable to find anything corresponding to the above options. (It's some cruddy THOMSON TG585 v7 router...)

im talking about your laptop wireless device settings, and not the router, since you said that you cant access your routers administrative account.
