Question

Use Desktop PC as stoage device with remote access

Asked by: justearth

Hello,
I have a desktop currently running Home XP SP3. I'd like to set it up to use as a remote storage device. What it an acceptable, easy way to do this?  I just want to plug it in in the corner hooked up to my broadband and the be able to access files on it from elsewhere via the internet or www.  I am ok switching the OS but prefer to keep this inexpensive.

Thoughts, ideas, suggestions?
Thanks,
JE

Sure, just share out the folder you want to use for the storage on your computer.  Or share the whole drive.

After that go to another compter and find the sorage one by going to \\storagecompuer\storage or browse the network places-entire network-ms network place-workgroup and select your computer.  You should see a shared drive.

Is this somthing you are trying to achieve?

Use Teamviewer :-)
Or, if you can, set your PC to be an exposed host on your router. All queries from the internet to your ip address will be redirected to your pc. But be careful, it's dangerous without a good firewall an AV scanner.

Xp Home do not support a file encryption and you cannot configure NTFS file permissions, and no RDP.  I would upgrade to XP Pro for what you want to do.

Thanks for the comments so far. But I think I need more help / explanation.  I want the whole drive to be accessible remotely. How do I set up the 'network' so I can the computer from elsewhere. What are the safety precautions I need to be worried about? How do I limit access to the machine? Would ubuntu be any better for safety, etc? Teamviewer sounds like it would work. Do you have experience with it?

Thanks again,
JE

Teamviewer is not for everyone, only for one person who is connected to the machine.
If you want a real share, try to set up filezilla ftp server, forward ftp ports 20 and 21 in your router to your PC and share a directory in filezilla. You can set up groups and users with different settings there.
If you want a dynamic name to ip resolver try dnydns.org.
