Whether you can do this is dependent on the brand/model of the switch. For example, with Cisco, you can only do this with 3750's or 6500 VSS switches. And IIRC there's a few Nortel's that allow multi-chassis etherchannel.
But this is typically a feature found on higher-end switches.

When you team network cards you form etherchannel. Unfortunatelly the other end has to be connected to two different switches OR the switches has to be stacked.
