Question

Modifying DNS settings

Asked by: sirbounty

I'm trying to use 2 specific DNS servers on my home network.
I've setup these 2 in my DNS settings on my router, a Linksys RTP300, along with the router's IP as the 3rd option (had this off initially).

Now, I've released/renewed all & flushed several times - I've got those specific ones in there, but I'm still getting the two from my ISP.
How can I remove them altogether?

You need to in your Linksys router for your DHCP settings within the router change these DNS IP addresses.

Check to make sure you are getting the IP addresses from your router please post ipconfig /all from the client.

>>You need to in your Linksys router for your DHCP settings within the router change these DNS IP addresses.<<

As mentioned, already done.
ipconfig /all reveals updated DNS, along with the 2 older (ISP) addresses (I have 5 total listed)

Did you remove the updated DNS servers from your DHCP settings on the linksys router? Can you post a screenshot of your linksys config?

by: sirbountyPosted on 2009-10-22 at 06:50:23ID: 25634130

Can you just take me at my word that I did?  :^)
I have 3 dns server settings in my linksys config - the 2 I'm adding, along with the local router's IP.
The old ISP dns are nowhere in my linksys settings.

Do you have any static DNS servers in your TCP\IP settings. Please post ipconfig /all.

If you go into your TCP\IP settings then click Advanced go to the DNS tab make sure you don't have any DNS servers listed here.

by: sirbountyPosted on 2009-10-22 at 10:33:48ID: 25636791

There are no static DNS servers assigned anywhere except on the router...

by: dariusgPosted on 2009-10-22 at 10:39:13ID: 25636866

So, there is know in the DNS tab correct. If you are still getting the other DNS servers it is on the router. Have you unplugged the router?

by: sirbountyPosted on 2009-10-22 at 11:08:12ID: 25637234

Why would you say it's on the router?
There's no evidence of that - and yes, it's been rebooted several times...

by: dariusgPosted on 2009-10-22 at 19:39:26ID: 25640989

If you are getting the IP address from the router then the router usually is the root cause.

You can also try searching the registry to see if the IP addresses for the rouge DNS servers are listed there which has happened to me a couple of times.

by: sirbountyPosted on 2009-10-25 at 17:29:01ID: 31644488

Only places in the registry were CS1 & CS2 - not in CCS...
Not showing up now, but it's still not working correctly.  Thanks for trying.
