Does anyone know of a published standard for the minimum length of a Cat 5 or 6 cable

Does anyone know of a published standard for the minimum length of a Cat 5 or 6 cable.  I have seen references to 10m but I need some hard core evidence that I can either permit or deny six inch patches between panels.

I dont know the published minimum standard but I dont really think there is one. In any case we use many very short cables. Maybe not 6 inches but we do use 1footers alot especially like you mentioned for patching.

I think if you were going to test it with a pentascanner or other device to determine if it meets cat 5e standards then it needs to be 1m in length so as not to "confuse" the tester.

However I've used them as short as 1 to 2 feet (1/2 meter or so) without problems.

The TIA/EIA 568B cable standard does not specify a minimum cable length for cat5e.   Here is a site that hosts a copy of the standard:

 Anything beyond this may be a common or recommended industry practice, but not an official standard.

 So in theory, you should be able to make a cable that is little more than 2 back-to-back RJ-45 connectors and it should work.

 (For my share of anecdotal evidence, I believe the shortest cable I've ever used was about 4 inches.)
