Calculating 8 Core Server Power Consumption

Hi,
I have done my maths and I found cloud based servers are too expensive.

I am looking for a co location facility and found many of them very competitive. I need to buy a 1U else 2U server to host my CRM system.

When I looked into colocation facility I found they charge
1. Server size (1u/2u/4u etc)
2. Server power consumption
3. Number of IPs needed and Bandwidth used

I can understand 1,3 but I do not understand formula for 2. server power consumption.

The price is pretty steep, I mean for 0.4 Amp it's 40 GBP then for 0.8 it's 80 GBP.
I have seen some high end servers like Dell poweredge 1950 with 8 cores consuming 1.5 Amps and that will cost me around 200GBP.

So questions I have
1. Which is a good energy efficient hardware I can buy below 700 GBP?
2. Is there a link somewhere to show what is Amps consumption for most 1U /2U HP/IBM/Dell servers in market?

Note : I do need at least 8 cores as my application is very data intensive.

Thanks

This is what I would recommend.

Let me know if this helps.

Hi,
Thanks for the link.

The million $ question for me is how much power do they consume?
The wattage doesn't seem doing any good to give me an indication of Amps consumed.

Thanks

Try out the ProLiant power advisor (use DL360p gen8 as the server to try it with), also try APC's UPS selector as it has power consumption figures for many servers. A single 5-2650L is probably the CPU to pick.

When you have the VA or Watts lust multiply it by 220V to get amps, ignore the phase angle, it's near enough 1 with modern PSUs.
Oops, £700 limit, server I suggested will cost well over that, I got 0.64A at 220v for 1*8 core CPU plus 4*8GB low voltage DIMMs and a couple of SATA PSUs but it'll cost over £1000.
Hi ,
I tried the links and pdf file but I am still not sure what will be an Amps consumption.

Does anyone have a calculator somewhere to show the Amps consumption?

Let's pick up Dell poweredge 1950 server

Thanks
Hi andyalder,
Where did you get the Amps rating for server?

This one is cheapest co location hosting provider in UK but you can't run prod platform. Please see link for Amp consumption.

Thanks
I ran the HP power advisor and it gave me the amps as well as the BTU cooling requirements (the cooling in the co-lo is partly why they charge so much for electricity).

Watts divided by volts = amps near enough anyway. (sorry, got it backwards last time).

Hi andyalder,
Brillaint.  Can I have a link for this calculator please?
Do you have something similar for Dell servers? They seem cheap and good value for money.

Thanks
I can see the diff dell 1950 is 670W while Hp is 460 watts.
Besides having 460 watts it's rated as 0.64 amps. If you do 460/220 then it shd be 2.09 Amps.

So I feel this is max power system will consume? In general usage it should be taking half or even less than that. Am I right in saying so?

Thanks
