Novell client 4.90 gives The tree or server cannot be found over vpn connection.

I am trying to map a network drive using novell client 4.90 over a vpn. I am running windows xp home. I enter the tree and context and get the error "The tree or server cannot be found...". The network guys tell me I need to use novell client 4.83 which is the version we use at work, but I can only find a download for 4.90 on novell's web site. Does this sound right? Is there anything I can do to version 4.90 to get it to work?
