How do I manually uninstall the Backup Exec Remote agent?

How do I manually uninstall the Backup Exec Remote agent? The Agent is not showing up in the Add or Remove programs.

I need to uninstall and reinstall because when I first tried to install the agent and I received an error stating that my server was not a media server.

This is the only computer that is giving me this problem. When installing the agent on the other computers I only need to be logged in as the Novell admin and the installation works fine. Can someone please provide me with the steps to manually uninstall this agent and also help me find out why it won’t attach to the media server?

The computer is running Windows XP Pro with all the lasted updates. I’m running Backup Exec for Netware v9.0. The server is Novel 6.
Thanks!

There's no such thing as "Novell 6". "Novell" is a company. It makes a number of products, including "NetWare", "Open Enterprise Server" and "SUSE Linux". You have "NetWare 6," just like you have "Windows XP" and not "Microsoft XP".

I want to make sure I have this correct in that you're installing remote agents on an XP Pro workstation, because the error message you're getting makes sense, though I could be wrong, I thought remote agents were for Servers and they had some other option of backing up client workstations.

I found this: http://support.veritas.com/docs/251151 - which may help

If I am wrong, and the remote agent does work for workstations (I only used it for servers in my past life), and there's no entry for it in Add/Remove Programs, I'd carefully blow away any reference to Backup Exec in the XP Pro client's registry.

The "why" part of your question raises some other questions:

Is there anything different about the problem PC?  Is it, for example, running the Windoze firewall while the others arent?
Are you using the appropriate, current Novell client32 client on your PC's or are you using the crapware(tm) client that comes with Windoze?
If you are using the Novell client32, how are you installing it?  Custom or "typical?" IP or IPX or both? Are you adjusting any settings after the install completes?

djhath,
Sorry, you're right. I'm running Netware 6. The remote agents are for the local workstations not for the server.
There is no entry for Backup Exec in the Add/Remove Programs (there should be but there isn't).  I'll try removing the entrees from the reg. Any idea on why it thinks my server is not a media server when the other workstations install fine?

Thanks,
Chad
Did you search the registry for remnants of the Remote Agent or possibly C:\Program Files\Veritas\NT\... to see if any files got installed.

You said:

"I need to uninstall and reinstall because when I first tried to install the agent and I received an error stating that my server was not a media server."

Did you subsequently try to reinstall it? If so, did you get the same message?  What kind of media are you using?  A CD or an install file you downloaded from their site, or something else?  And is it the same one as you used for the other PCs?

Are there any other Netware boxes in your network?  And are you sure that you're pointing to the correct one while trying to install?

BTW - I'm not asking these fundamental questions to make you feel dumb.  Believe me, I've had plenty of things not work due to my own carelessness in not looking at something simple.  I'm just trying to cross off the obvious things.

I have not searched the reg. yet. The User is "busy" right now.

I tried to reinstall a few times and every time I got the same message. We are using backup tapes. I'm using a CD and it’s the same CD I've used on the other computers. There is only one Netware box and yes I'm sure I'm pointing to the right one.

I always feel dumb compared to all you experts on this site so don't worry about it. :) The help is greatly appreciated

Maybe this will help. We upgraded the Backup Exec on the server to VERITAS Backup Exec 9.0.4202 for NetWare Servers Hotfix 1. We then had to run an update on all the other workstations. Maybe I need to install the newest version now because the Server has already been upgraded. Before the upgrade everything installed fine from that CD. I was thinking I could install the remote agent from the CD we've always used and then update it.

I found in the Hotfix 1 read me files that I should download and install the Remote Agent for Windows NT/2000 from the Backup Exec 9.0.4202 for NetWare Servers package that is available on the VERITAS support web site. I see if that works.
Since the user is using XP Pro, you could RDP into their machine as an administrator and look at the registry.

It definitely seems like more of a Backup Exec issue more than a Netware issue.  Do you have any level of support with Veritas (Symantec)?

Were the other remote agents installed prior to the upgrade on the server?

Good Idea...  I see what I can do.

No support plan. Priced per call only.

The other agents were installed before the upgrade. So that's go to be what's causing the issue right?

I couldn't find the Remote Agent on their website . These are the only two versions they have. Do you know how I could get 9.0.4202?

Upgrading to 9.1 (or really 9.2) might be in your best interest anyway.  I found this:

http://support.novell.com/techcenter/articles/nc2002_05a.html

I didn't realize 9.0 was so old (noting the date of the article).

http://eval.veritas.com/mktginfo/products/Documentation/Data_Protection/benw_system_requirement.pdf

9.2 will even run on Netware 6.0 (even 5.1!)

Either way, I think the solution to your problem is going to end up with some $$ going to Symantec.

Yeah, I wish we had support. I also wish he had the newest version. I think we are waiting until we get a new server before upgrading.

I'm sure it’s the client for Netware. I'm installing it from the original CD that says "Veritas Backup Exec 9.0 For Netware" on it. We are not running MS clients on any of our machines. I didn't even know they made one.

I found the VERITAS Backup Exec 9.0.4202 for NetWare download. I'm downloading it right know. I removed all the Reg entries for Backup Exec and will install the new version once it gets to me.
.
By Novell Client vs Microsoft client, we're talking about the client you use to connect to NetWare, not the Veritas BE client.

Do you have a red "N" in the system tray/information area/whatever they call it today?
Also, I was under the impression that 9.0 was so bad Veritas gave folx free upgrades to 9.1... maybe I'm thinking about something else...

Oh... Yeah I'm using the Netware client. I have the Red "N"

I called their support line. These are the steps it took to fix it.

Ran “bestop” from the server
Open the  hosts file on the server and add workstation
Open the hosts file on the workstation and added the server
Ran “bestart” from the server
Opened Port 10000 on workstation's Windows Firewall
Allowed beremote.exe in workstation's Windows Firewall

Once I did this I was able to install the remote agent and the admin console could see the workstation.

Thank you ShineOn for your help! I'm giving the points to djhath because he told me to call tech support and they solved the problem. However, I wish someone would have mentioned these steps to save me the $80 call.
