Question

Software inventory

Asked by: Fveng

Wondering if anyone has a free tool out there that can scan all computers in a domain and report as to what software is installed.  I prefer free over cost but if there is a good tool out there I'd be willing to pay.

If you are planning to keep the list of installed software current, you might consider a system that automatically gathers and stores this type of information in a database.

Son of Snoop on Steroids (SOSOS) is a system information utility that inventories computer hardware, software, configuration, and security-related information.  It gathers over 220 pieces of information about computers and optionally stores this information in a database.  It can be run locally or can be used by an administrator to scan a network

It is completely free (and is also available as VB.Net source code, if you want to play with it)

Fiberlink has a pay solution, but it's quite good, and has several tiers.

First of all, it's a hosted solution, so there's no hardware or software for you to install or configure - they use the term Mobility As A Service to cover this.

Their Visibility offering will scan your inventory for installed software and then give executives clear management reporting and dashboarding around what's there.

Beyond this, they offer a Control service which will actually enable you to push policies out to end points to ensure patch levels are up-to-date, AV has been updated, and so on.

Finally, they offer a Mobility offering which will enable end users on the road to connect to a variety of POPs without configuring each separately (based on a central configuration repository and a partnership Fiberlink has with Waypoint).
