Dummy question, how many machines can a quad core run with ESXi

I was under the impression that ESXi can could only run one machine per core, just like Hyper-V.  However I swear last night I accidentally started 3 machines on a duel core server I was tinkering with last night, how many machines can ESXi run per core?

Hyper-V can also run more than 1 VM/vCPU per core. I have 20 VMs running on a 8 core server without any performance issue. CPU utilization is less than 10%. I would run more VMs but I ran out of RAM. Either product should let you keep adding VMs until you hit a hard RAM limit.
