How do I reset my Thinkpad T42 Rescue and Recovery password?

I have a file that cannot be deleted or accessed on my C: drive.  In trying to boot into safe mode, I am confronted with a dialog box asking for a Rescue and Recovery password.  I bought the TP used, so I do not know the password.

My first thought is the Rescue and Recovery password is not required for Safe Mode.  Are you pressing F8 and specifically selecting Safe Mode?

You can download Spybot and along with that program will come a shredder that will delete that file.

     Thanks for your comments.  I did get into safe mode by tapping F8 during startup.  Apparently, I did not tap it enough previously.
 
     I downloaded and installed Spybot, put it into advanced mode and tried the file shredder.  However,  I still get the system message "<Filename> is not accessible.  Access is denied."  The file is a zero length folder that I earlier attempted to move.  After the move, I then tried to delete some files inside the folder.  But, the system (Win XP/Prof) will not grant me access.  

     I was able to access Rescue and Recovery.  I had forgotten that I had set a password when I first got this Thinkpad (the hint helped me remember the password).  So, that part of the problem is solved.  However, gaining access to R and R did not help in deleting the persistent, unwanted folder I referred to above.

What are the names of the files inside the folder.

I moved the parent folder that contained the folder I wanted access to, back to its original location.  Well, I now have access the the folder and its contents!  Strange!  I did not realize that by moving a folder, that this could happen.  

I consider this isssue/problem solved/closed.  Thanks again for responding.

There are eight folders inside the folder in question with various names pertaining to amateur radio.

Moving a folder should not have locked you out of it.  I'd go to My Computer, C:\  Left Click, Properties / Tools and run a check disk on that drive.

Strange that moving a folder would lock you out of it.  I guess I'd have to see it.
