Asked by: jsctechy

guys, having a huge problem here
cannot start up windows... a user of mine got the message that said "c:\windows\system32\config\system" is either missing or corrupt, please use windows xp cd to get into recovery console to fix this issue

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

that is the article that i got from MS to fix the problem, but in the first step, i cant copy the system file from the config folder (i assume it IS missing) and i cant copy the system file from the REPAIR folder either... is there anyway i can copy the system file from the XP cd? or any other way around this? i have had the user try using "LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION" but no cigar

This should help, the area you want is XP Repair Install. Basically you need to boot from CD and reinstall windows. It will keep the user's files, but little else.

Fastest and easiest way...

If you have access to a CD burner, do the following:

Download the Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset (formerly known as ERD Commander).
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=5D600369-0554-4595-8AB4-C34B2860E087&displaylang=en

Download it. Run it. It will create an ISO file. The file is located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset. The filename is erd50.iso Burn the iso file to a CD. Boot the CD. You will boot into a windows environment. From there, you have access to a great many tools, such as system restore, checking the drive, and much more. I would try doing a restore first. This will replace the suystem file for you and you don't have to worry about permission issues.

hey guys i was able to copy the system file, but now when i try to startup windows, i get this error once the system gets into windows
lsass.exe when trying to update password return status value provided as current password incorrect
and then the computer will just restart and keep doing this loop
any ideas? what does this error mean?

by: flubbsterPosted on 2009-02-05 at 09:29:11ID: 23561730

You are getting this because more of the registry needs to be replaced along with the file you already did. See here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545  (The last boxed error message)

You can either follow the entire guided procedure using the recovery console, or try what I suggested above in my post.

btw... have you tried safe mode since the repair you did? If not, do so. You might be able to do a system restore from there if it boots.

It would be easier, and much faster to get to a System Restore Point, to restore the hives from.....If SR was enabled.....

http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Windows/XP/Q_22000853.html

The warning from the above MS Link regarding the Registry Restore, has a warning as well, not to use on OEM systems. Although it doesnt always hurt, it can be a bad thing....

by: flubbsterPosted on 2009-02-05 at 12:53:23ID: 23564113

you can select to reset the administration password. You can also do a system restore, among other things.

by: johnb6767Posted on 2009-02-05 at 12:55:11ID: 23564140

Did you happen to read the link I" posted, on doing the Registry Restore, form the System Volume Informatin folder, instead of the Repair folder?

by: jsctechyPosted on 2009-02-05 at 13:03:54ID: 23564239

yes i did that already, i was able to copy the file that i wasnt able to copy from the config folder (the SYSTEM file that said it wasnt there, thoguh i didnt copy all the others because they were fine when i tried copying them in the first palce) but still nothing
should i try copyin the other files from the sysvol folder instead? or do you think that since they were in the repair folder they should be good

by: johnb6767Posted on 2009-02-05 at 13:17:44ID: 23564408

Repair folder is from when Windows is first booted...... Thats bad..... Hence why it is common to get lsass.exe errors using that method. Using the SysVol folder, are your recent restore points. So your user accoutns will all be the same etc.....

You really dont ever wanna use the repair folder for this....

Heres the thing. If you make it back into the system successfully, you will need to do a full restore to another restore point, so it is complete.....

by: jsctechyPosted on 2009-02-05 at 13:49:38ID: 23564699

john,
i am able to get into the system using that CD
when my user tries to go to system restore, he gets an error

now, i cant get into the recovery console because it keeps asking for the administrator password and nobody knows it.... any idea how to get around that? tried using the locksmith program in ERD but no cigar

by: johnb6767Posted on 2009-02-05 at 13:59:49ID: 23564795

Create one of these tools.....Probably the Knoppix will be ideal for this.... (never been a fan of the ERD applications...)

Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

UBCD4Win
http://www.ubcd4win.com

KNOPPIX - Live Linux Filesystem On CD-
http://www.knoppix.org/

For the Recovvery Console......

To remove the password prompt in the recovery console....

(first of all, did you just try hitting enter, with it blank?)

Boot to one of those utilites above, and launch Regedit. In Regedit, eselect File>Load Hive, and navigate to the "C:\Windows\System32\Config" directory, and select the Software hive.

Create a friendly name for it and go to the following key in the loaded hive....

"Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole"

Set the SecurityLevel dword value to 1

Select File>Unload Hive, and unload it.

Exit the Booted OS, and retry the recovery console...

by: jsctechyPosted on 2009-02-05 at 14:01:17ID: 23564806

would i be able to use the recovery console when i boot up with the ERD cd?

by: johnb6767Posted on 2009-02-05 at 14:08:10ID: 23564880

Been a while since using the ERD. If you use knoppix, or UBCD4Win, then you can use a familiar Windows Explorer type GUI, instead of command line...

by: jsctechyPosted on 2009-02-05 at 14:12:47ID: 23564927

dont know why its asking me for a password now when it wasnt before... anyway to get around this? at all? i need to get into the recovery console

by: johnb6767Posted on 2009-02-05 at 16:14:23ID: 23565756

If you have a BartPE CD/Kn oppix CD/ERD (I think ERD has regedit, and if so, this will work also....)

Follow the instructions at my 23564795 posting above. This will eliminate the password prompt....

Have you tried hitting enter at the password prompt??
