i am trying to set up a backup with ARC serve r12.5
and every time i run a backup i receive this error
"E8535 Failed to receive data from the agent"
i can successfully submit a job and it will format the tape and then mount the tape but will just stay like that for about 20 minutes
and come back with the above error
if any one knows were im going wrong i would be most grateful if help me
my server is windows 2003

Please post the logs, as that will help to determine the issue.....That being said here are a couple of common things with Arc Serve:
Disable File Estimate as sometimes arcserve will time out before it can complete the estimate.

When you upgrade to 12.5 or sometimes on new installs:
Failed to receive data from the Client Agent.
Reason:
The network connection was lost or a response was not received from the agent within the specified timeout period. A Windows error code may be embedded in the message to indicate the reason for failure.
Action:
Check the network connections and verify that the Agent for Microsoft SQL Server services are running. Increase the ReceiveTimeout value in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR
This value is measured in seconds. The default value is 1200 (20 minutes).
Note: This setting is shared for all agents which operate under the Universal Agent service.

and edited the reg key still no difference
i have a feeling that it has something to do with authentication but just cant put my finger on it
im gona have a reed of the doc from the link and hopfully something there will work

Its just that the backup server or the agent had closed the connection as it did not receive any packet till the timeout period. Look at the KB and make the recommended registry changes...

try uninstalling & then reinstall the agent
