First, you need to determine the port.  Is this standard HTTP, HTTPS, or does one have to specify a port?

Next, you need to find out how to publish the service through your firewall.  What model of firewall are you using?

Finally, you need to make sure that the server has a route out to the Internet.

You say VPN in the posting .. do the assessors already access information on the server ? - if so, how do they connect at the moment.

If they have a proper VPN connection open, which isn't being filtered at all, then they should get full access to the server as if they were a local user.

NO the VPN we set up is not working well and either they can not connect at itmes or the connection drops , they can get internet connection fine and access pages etc, so if we can get them connected in this way outside the vpn then that would be better.

In which case, are you happy that the "public" could also potentially access this site ? - as they only thing that would be stopping them would be any password security you set up.  On the whole a VPN is a more secure way of accessing such an application, that you only want certain people to access.

Sure i know there is a security downside to this. The data itself is not particularly sensitive and is backed up daily.  We are looking into the issues and may try a citrix solution although it will prove costly but if in the mesan

If you're not too bothered about the open access then it should just be a case of opening up ports on the firewall, with port forwarding back to the SBS server.   If the remote users have static IP's, you can lock it down that way as well.   Alternatively the likes of Vasco provide IIS solutions where authenticating users require a security token ( could be a device, could be an app on a mobile phone).  Also Sonicwall do SSL VPN 200, which is relatively low cost SSL VPN device, which will do some additional security, like emailing a one time password back to users.

What kind of firewall do you have ?  ( and hence we can advise on setting up the necessary port forwarding). Also, when you connect internally  what sort of URL do you connect with ?  I assume you have a static IP on your internet facing connection ?

regards Simon

if the VPN doesn't work, why not do NAT forwarding to the server ip address for the program?

by: censuraPosted on 2009-10-05 at 13:52:57ID: 25499622

What is nat forwarding and how does it work
Regards

by: ccpjcPosted on 2009-10-05 at 14:10:01ID: 25499801

basically, nat takes one of your public IP's and points it to one of your internal IP's

so for example, if your program resides on ip address y.y.y.y and you have a public ip address of x.x.x.x, you setup NAT so when someone goes to x.x.x.x they are seeing the webpage of y.y.y.y

I Know this might sound dumb but how do i obtain the ip address the program resides on.

I just installed one such program - a helpdesk for the assessors to log the calls  they have about it problems. Sorry to ask a simple q

kind regards
