Data recovery

I installed Windows 7 on my Windows Vista HP laptop yesterday. I did not back up the data on the laptop before installing Windows 7. I thought it would install Windows 7 and retain all data on my PC. I am not sure, maybe I chose the wrong option and that caused everything to to get deleted. Windows 7 is not correctly installed but all my data are gone!!

I had several important files there. Is there any way I could recover the lost files?
