Sharepoint document library migration from SPS 2003 to MOSS 2007: preservation of metadata?

Tags: sql, moss, 2007, sharepoint, migration
Hi all!

I have a migration problem with a customer, who's having an existing SPS2003 and a new MOSS server set up. The old SP server is on one AD domain, the new MOSS server is on another AD domain. The customer is also migrating AD and Exchange (not part of my project).

The new MOSS server is already set up, and work on creating the new intranet solution has started. Existing documents in document libraries should be reviewed and copied as needed as part of the project, approx a few hundred documents. Only the document libraries are of interest to the customer, the rest of the old  content should be redesigned and recreated. However, the customer has later realized that all document libraries from the old server should be migrated to the new server. These libraries contain approx 5000 documents.

I originally planned of doing this by WebDAV-enabling each server and copying (drag & drop or xcopy) between the folder structures. However, this strategy "strips" all existing Sharepoint metadata from the documents. This is the out-of-the-box metadata, i.e. Title, owner (Created by/Modified by) and date/time columns. After copy the documents ends up with empty Title column, todays date as document date and currently logged on user account (typically Administrator) as owner.

Is there another strategy to migrating only the document libraries from SPS 2003 to MOSS 2007, apart from the technical migration paths? I am considering doing gradual upgrade, since database upgrade seems even more complex, however it seems to me that even gradual upgrade is "too much" since all I need are the document libraries and out-of-the-box document metadata.

The comment in this article (http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/2003_Server/Q_22770331.html) seems to indicate that copying through the file system can be done, however it does not say wether or not the metadata is preserved? All constructive comments and solutions are very welcome!

Thanks in advance, sincerely Leo

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it.
