Monitoring servers which are in an LAN

I would be interested in knowing wich type of software could help us in monitoring our network. I mean, i would like to be updated every day of the status of our MS Windows Servers 2003 and some specific Windows XP machines with the purpose (for example) of being notified if for any reason one of them is down.
