Who is the bandwidth hog? Bandwidth monitoring software

Always around mid week our network gets bogged down and very slow, I'm trying to find out where this is coming from.  Does anyone know of any good monitoring software tools to try and pinpoint the bandwidth hog(s) workstations/users?

You don't say if your network is small or large but here are a few options:

NetFlow Analyzer or PRTG if your network consists of Cisco devices capable of running NetFlow.  Additionally, you can check if your switches have a "top-talker" command you can use to find which hosts are the top talkers.

As a less reliable low-tech option, if your switches indicate activity through LEDs, try to check which one seems to be flashing the most!  Sometimes, the easiest/cheapest solutions are the best ones...

Hi Plemieux72,

It's a mid size network, I have 7 remote sites on a frame relay network.  All of my locations have Cisco 1841 routers and our main office has a Cisco 3825.  Right now I'm using Paessler Network graphing but need something to that gets more specific, down to IP address if possible (we use static addressing).  I'll check into Netflow with Paessler.  Thank you!

3- PRTG
4- NTOP
5- BANDWIDTHD
6- Adventnet Netflow Analyzer

Do you have a linux based router/firewall or PC connected to your LAN(s)?

If so, I may have great solution for you which I used to find out who was downloading and sharing music files on our corp LAN with multiple NETs.

One problem,... I cannot remember its name right now! I know I can it to you Monday when I am at work!

It is OPenSOurce and is found on SourceForge.net. It provided traffic stats for every IP on my LANs through this multihomed Linux PC.

If you don't have a linux based PC, then this will be mute, but I'ss post it anyway just in case tomorrow.

The linux application is called iptraf.

You can get it from:

http://iptraf.seul.org/

It really works and works well. You just need a linux box.  I set of a multihomed ClarkConnect Box for this and did an apt-get iptraf and she werked!
