The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

CISCO sWITCHES CONFIGURATION

Tags: cisco, 2960
Hi All,
I need a very urgent help to configure 5 2960 switches and 1 3560 switch(layer 3).
I want to configure Vlan's into my network, and i want to place 2960's into access-layer and 3560 into distribution layer.
first i want to know the cabling between these switches, how i can connect
2960's have also got 2 spf ports each and 3560 has got 4 spf's and i don't know what for they are used?
on 2960's each has got a total of 24-ports, but the last two ports on each has got spf's above it with the same numbers. i mean port 23 and port 24 has got spf ports above it but they look like on the same port number.
how  and when i can use spf ports...i have no idea
if i plug in the cable into gig 0/23 on 3560--------------gig 0/23 of SW1-2960 ,

and SW1-2960 gig 0/24-------gig 0/24 of SW2-2960
gig 0/23 of SW2-2960 to------------gig 0/23 of SW3-2960 and ............................
do i have a chance of having loops?how to avoid it?

i have domain controllers and SQL database servers, mail servers in the network and also Voice switch that will be used by everyone in the organization.
how can i implement my Vlan's? i have call ceentre software running on SQL server and Finance server running also on SQL server. i have 1 amil server, everyone needs access to mail
i have 2 domain controllers, so again evryone need to access the DC's to authenticate
I have Recruitment and marketing departments.
Recruitment ,Marketing, and Call centre uses the same SQL server
To simplify Everyone needs access to Servers, but i want to put finance in to Vlan10 and Callcentre into Vlan 20 , All the servers into Vlan 30 and the rest into Vlan 40
Can anybody come up the solution and design ideas with the sort fo equipment i have got.
please...please respond asap as i need to configure these urgently as we are moving to new office and we bought these cisco equipment

regards

Do you want trunking vlans across switches or do you just want to add a switch to a vlan and everyone on that switch will be on that vlan? The SFP modules are small form factor pluggable 10/100/1000 uplinks. To use them you need to buy Cisco GLC-T transceivers.

08.14.2007 at 10:21AM PDT, ID: 19693724
HI,
Thanks for your reply.i'm really desperate looking for help.i have connected my switches as followes
3560---2960_1---2960_2------2960_3-----2960_4-----2960_5
and finally 3560-----2960_5

I hope i have done right.

now i want the trunking VLANS across switches, if u can help please
All the 2960G switches are Gigabit Switches.
and my workstation may be 100Mbps, so in this case do i need to set speed on each port to 100Mbps or 1000Mbps? pls advise
in each switch i'm using 23 and 24 ports as uplinks
please also advise how i can divide my whole infrastructure ( i mean servers , finance and call centre and recruitmet) into Vlans and how they can access all the servers no matter which VLAN they belongs to
can u please respond asap
i appreciate your every help
thanks and regards

You can design the vlans one closet basis , it will be easier to manage, make sure you shut down defalt vlan in all the swicthes, first create a VTP domain in 3560 switch

3560
vtp mode server
vtp domain test

interface vlan 5
ip address 10.5.0.1 255.255.255.0
no shutdown

interface vlan 6
ip address 10.6.0.1 255.255.255.0
no shutdown

interface vlan 7
ip address 10.7.0.1 255.255.255.0
no shutdown

interface vlan 8
ip address 10.8.0.1 255.255.255.0
no shutdown

and create one more vlan for swicthes management

interface vlan 9
ip address 10.9.0.1 255.255.255.0
no shutdown
in global mode using this command for intervlan routing

ip routing

for eg
hostname Switch
ip subnet-zero
ip routing
vtp domain test
vtp mode server

then in rest of the switches

vtp domain test
vtp mode client

interface vlan 9
ip address 10.9.0.2 255.255.255.0
no shutdown

in global mode configure

ip default gateway 10.5.0.1

follow similar steps in all swicthes make sure your chaging the management vlan ip address in swicthes

Hi Yasir,
thanks for the reply.i have enabled the Vlan 1 and using it for management. do i need to change to the above, if so how can i remove the vlan 1  ? i mean the ip address assigned to it ? i think the following will work
conf t
int valn 1
no ip address x.x.x.x 255.255.255.0
shut

is it correct?
i didn't understand the inter vlan routing command.like i said , if i want all the users to access the servers, say suppose servers are in Vlan 10 and each department have their own Vlan's and if all the departments wants to access the servers Vlan , what should i do? what are the config steps?
please advise
i appreciate your help

interface vlan 7
ip address 10.7.0.1 255.255.255.0
ip helper address 10.0.0.1 (ur dhcp)
no shutdown

yes you can your commands to disable vlan1

08.15.2007 at 04:52AM PDT, ID: 19698620
Since the 3560 is your core switch with routing capabilities, I would hook each of your 2960's into it. Start with just crossovers and you can set up etherchannel later for redundancy. I would use the SFP ports with GLC-T adapters if possible, these are the true uplink ports for the switch.

Yasirirfan gave you a really good configuration and it will work for what you need. Just remember to backup your configurations. If the core switch crashes, you'll lose your vlans accross switches when in client/server vtp mode.

hi mikecr and yasir,
thanks for the quick reply mates.i have GLC-T's and i will use them.can i have a same subnet in all the VLAN's?

08.15.2007 at 05:40AM PDT, ID: 19698920
also i got a software version 12.2 (25) see2 and image is C3560-Ipbase-M
model is WS-C3560G-24TS.
does it support inter VLANs? please advise

08.15.2007 at 05:44AM PDT, ID: 19698948
If you are going to have the same subnet in all vlans, you're actually defeating the purpose of a vlan. A vlan is designed as a broadcast domain where broadcasts don't pass cutting down on excessive traffic on your network. If you create multiple vlans, then they need to be routable on their own subnets so that this will work. If you collapse them all into the same subnet, then you only need one vlan.

How many hosts do you have including servers? If you have less than 150, I probably wouldn't use more than two vlans, one for users and one for servers. If you have more than that, then I would break up the users into departments and assign vlans accordingly.

i mikecr,
thanks for the quick reply .i really appreciate if you can reply asap, as i need this working today.
i only use two vlans as i have a maximum of 120 users.to remove any existing vlans from the database what should i do? can u pls give the commands for that. actually i thought of using 3 vlans in the network, so that i can keep finance department in a separate vlan.now i will put finance into vlan 20, servers in to vlan 30, and the rest of the users into vlan 40.but by enabling the routing, anyone can access anything, if i'm right?at the same time i need all the users must recive DHCP information, from a single dhcp server and must be able to authenticate to domain controllers.by doing vlan what i'm achieveing? also how can i move interfaces from one VLAn to another?do ineed to configure a dhcp server info on the switch? how?and on which one?
can all the clients in dirrent Vlan use a same gateway ip address or different?
yasir said
ip default gateway 10.5.0.1
what it does? pls explain.and do i need to configure on every switch the default gateway as 10.5.0.1
i'm confused.
please don't mind i'm not that great in cisco stuff

08.15.2007 at 08:43AM PDT, ID: 19700658
Yasirirfan gave you all the commands above that I can see. Just configure your switches according to what he has and use the ip forward command on your vlan to forward requests for dhcp to the dhcp server. Just create the amount of vlans you need, 3 according to your needs and use the commands above to configure. To add a port to a vlan, get into the switch the you need to add the port on and run these example commands using your own information:

config t
interface fa0/14
switchport access vlan 2

If you need to do a whole range of ports on one vlan, do:
config t
interface range fa0/1 - 24

It should then look like this:
switch_(config-if-range)#    Then you can run the same command above:
switchport access vlan 2   (This will set the entire port range to vlan 2.)

Other than that, yasirirfan provided all the commands you should need to get up and functional.

thanks for all your support so far.
i have managed to configure 1 3560 switch and 5 2960's. the configs are as followes pls, have a look and let me know if anything is wrong?also please note that i have setup my DHCP server 192.168.0.7 on VLAN 40 only for the time being to test.
if i have a scope in dhcp 192.168.40.x 255.255.255.0 , do you think all my clients under vlan 40 will get the dhcp settings with the config i have done on the 3560.i really , really need to know this one as i only have one dhcp in the network and i want all my users to pick the ip address dynamically.is it enough to configure dhcp server to distribute to the clients with the default gateway as 192.168.0.40?
i'm  almost there mates, please takeme to the end, and make it all success.
i really really appreciate your help
