Question

need help analyzing wireshark capture

I have been having several ferformance issues with a server and I finally decided to dowload wireshark and take a look at the captured data to see if I can figure out what the problem is. I don't know much about reading those packets, I do see some errors but don't know what is causing them or if there is more going on that I can see on the capture. Anyone knows of a good place to get help analyzing the data captured? Got a book on wireshark but I guess I am still to new to wireshark to figure the issue out in a timely manner.

I would advice you to use Ethereal, It's used by network professionals around the world for troubleshooting, analysis, software and protocol development, and education. It has all of the standard features you would expect in a protocol analyzer, and several features not seen in any other product. Its open source license allows talented experts in the networking community to add enhancements. It runs on all popular computing platforms, including Unix, Linux, and Windows.

I understand Wireshark is the same program as ethereal. That's what I used to do my captures... I'm just trying to understand what some of the packets might be. I am new to packet analyzers and I'm still trying to figure things out.

Ohh, sorry to drive you that direction, then I understand that you have a traffic but you don't understand what's bad and what's good, then How about to go to :

http://www.protocols.com/

It has a lot of explaination of each protocols and it's meaning, try it and let me know.

Within Wireshark you can right click on a TCP packet and select 'Follow TCP stream', this might help you to identify where there are problems.  It helps to clean up a ocnversation by reducing the amount of visible packets to 1 conversation.
