Browse All Topics1. Is there anything out there I can use to take along to someones company network in order to assist me in asking structured questions, dependant on the companies needs, ie exchange server use, servers, backup, etc etc, you know to appear as professional as one can be?
I have played around with 2 inventory type packages below and they were straight forward. One of the layouts was better than the other, as in user friendly to the eye!! and the 3rd below i couldnt use but had the ability to create an actual diagram of someones network, instead of my actually drawing one. this would enable a more reliable conversation to occur with this.
- newtpro professional 2.5 - seems to be straight forward to use
- tri-setup (Total Network Inventory) - seems to be straight forward to use
- plixer-scrutinizer-win32 - installed but it wouldnt allow me to continue for some reason. It also creates a diagram of the network topologies in place on someones network, which is useful rather than trying to pictures someones network myself.
2. Im basically looking for a list of structured questions I can ask a customer?
3. Something like the software above that can also print network topologies off and list a a networks make up in some individual order, which can also be printed off to discuss and view with customer & list and individuals pc makeup and updates, service packs, ip address etc etc?
4. Also what is a technology assessment: 513.490.9887 ?
5. Can anyone assist or show me something I can look at on those 15 day evaluations?
there is other programs out there but not sure what I maybe missing as it is the ECONOMIC crisis and everyone is going through hard times when it comes to the cost of things!!

i understand your comment snmp now!!
1. do you know of any issues that programs like this have, as when people buy these kinds of software, there maybe some bug issue to do with compatability issues, etc or something but not realised until later?
2. i know some people are afraid to run programs like this at work just incase and even if the software says that there wouldnt be a problem. can you give any comments towards this as im in that same frame of mind also. other than reading and reading all the books that have network devices or even other software attached to the network which would take for ever?
3. i presume its not something you use or have needed to?
I used it before the company was purchased by Solarwinds, and it was able to give me a basic idea of what the network looked like.
It's only going to use a SNMP read community, so there's nothing to worry about as far as the software making changes on the network. If they are auditing logs and you are not using the correct SNMP community string, then they may receive alerts regarding that, but that's probably all that will happen.
There's no need to configure SNMP traps for this tool to work.
Just log into the router/switch/whatever and set the following:
snmp-server community <YOURCOMMUNITY> RO
The RO stand for read-only.
Then just point your software to the IP of the device and specify the string you entered, and you should be able to read the SNMP tables
-J
What do you mean by picked up? The SNMP software you use, in this case Lansurveyor, will perform a SNMP query against your device using whatever string you specify in it's configuration. Just make sure the string you put into Lansurveyor matches the string you put into your Cisco router/switch and you're good.

I know that LanSurveyor can be used to create a basic diagram of a network, given that you have the SNMP community string.

It also comes with a free trial. It's worth checking out:
