Question

Equallogic - OID for Volume Free Space ?

Asked by: bondit

Hi,

I have been asked to configure a monitoring & alerting rule (using LPI's Managed Workplace) for the free space on a volume on an Equallogic PS5000 iSCSI SAN (firmware 3.3.1).

Looking through the MIB file for that device (obtained from the equallogic website) I have not been able to identify an OID that reports the free space available on a volume. And although we have a support contract with Dell Equallogic they were not able to give us any information about MIBs and OIDs (apart from telling us where to download the MIBs from, which we already knew).

Does anyone out there know of the appropriate OID ?
Should I be looking in a generic MIB ?

I have done snmp walk on the device using iReasoning MIB Browser. I can locate an OID for the total space of a volume, but not the free space. Does that OID even exist?

The equallogic management page shows the item that I'm looking for (see pic showing used and free space on volume), so you would think there would be an OID for it.

Thanks.

Why don't you try the HOSTRESOURCES-MIB.

OID 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.2.3.1 (hrStorageEntry)

by: Andy_QuaeyhaegensPosted on 2009-09-15 at 00:46:33ID: 25332634

Otherwise you're looking for 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.5.1.7.7 (from the EQLVOLUME-MIB) representing EqliscsiVolumeStatusEntry

Hi, thanks for the tip.

I have actually looked through both those MIB files before.

I just ran both those OIDs you suggested against the equallogic, but I get a message back saying  "(Snmp No Such Object)" - see screen snip below.

Maybe its time I put in a request with our network administrator to upgrade the firmware. We're using v3.3.1 but v4.0.7 is available. I'm just worried that I get the same result after the upgrade.

hmmm - could be you'll get the same result. But - upgrade nevertheless.

Does it respond to any OID under the 12740 Enterprise OID?
>> snmpwalk against 1.3.6.1.4.1.12470 and verify result?

by: bonditPosted on 2009-09-15 at 02:28:29ID: 25333166

It does respond to many 12740 Enterprise OID. (See screen snip below)

But not 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.5.1.7.7 (EqliscsiVolumeStatusEntry)

Nor does it respond to OID 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.2.3.1 (hrStorageEntry) (from hostresources-mib)

Ok - now we need to find out to which mibs it does respond.

1 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.15 CRONTAB-MIB  (crontab.mib)
2 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.12 EQLAGENT-MIB  (eqlagent.mib)
3 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.13 EQLBALANCER-MIB  (eqlbalancer.mib)
4 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.4 EQLCONTROLLER-MIB  (eqlcontroller.mib)
5 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.3 EQLDISK-MIB  (eqldisk.mib)
6 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.1 EQLGROUP-MIB  (eqlgroup.mib)
7 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.9 EQLIPADDR-MIB  (eqlipaddr.mib)
8 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.11 EQLISCSI-MIB  (eqliscsi.mib)
9 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.2 EQLMEMBER-MIB  (eqlmember.mib)
10 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.10 EQLRAID-MIB  (eqlraid.mib)
11 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.16 EQLSTORAGEPOOL-MIB  (eqlpool.mib)
12 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.14 EQLVOLBALANCER-MIB  (eqlvolbalancer.mib)
13 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.5 EQLVOLUME-MIB  (eqlvolume.mib)

Can you find out which of these are responsive?

by: Andy_QuaeyhaegensPosted on 2009-09-15 at 03:46:09ID: 25333510

You can already leave out the EQLAGENT-MIB, because that's included in your screenshot ;-)

by: bonditPosted on 2009-09-15 at 05:36:59ID: 25334150

It responds to all mibs EXCEPT for:

1 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.15 CRONTAB-MIB  (crontab.mib)
3 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.13 EQLBALANCER-MIB  (eqlbalancer.mib)
12 v2 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.14 EQLVOLBALANCER-MIB  (eqlvolbalancer.mib)

It does repond to eqlvolume-mib, but just not the oid you mentioned.

(it's already after 10:30pm in my time-zone at the moment, so I need to call it a night. So unfortunately I'll have to continue with this tomorrow, but thanks for your help so far).

by: Andy_QuaeyhaegensPosted on 2009-09-15 at 11:11:22ID: 25337598

Ok - no prob. But I'll have to come back to you in your afternoon...

But we need to focus the EQLVOLUME-MIB, and see what data it returns. I suggest these oid's for a start:

1) eqliscsiVolCollectionName TABULAR 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.5.1.7.22.1.2
2) eqliscsiVolumeAdminStatus TABULAR 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.5.1.7.1.1.9
3) eqliscsiVolumeName TABULAR 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.5.1.7.1.1.4
4) eqliscsiVolumeSize TABULAR 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.5.1.7.1.1.8
5) eqliscsiVolumeStatusReservedSpaceAvail TABULAR 1.3.6.1.4.1.12740.5.1.7.7.1.3

by: bonditPosted on 2009-09-15 at 16:28:00ID: 25340602

It returned an error on all those OID's.
"No such name error"

by: Andy_QuaeyhaegensPosted on 2009-09-16 at 00:16:37ID: 25342754

Then I'm sorry, you'll probably need to contact Equallogic support for that... And with SNMP it's very hard to find good support... I know.

I don't think I can be of any more assistance...

by: bonditPosted on 2009-09-18 at 02:59:50ID: 25364286

Thanks for your input anyway. We'll upgrade the firmware and if we still have the same issue then we will "try" to get help Equallogic support.
