Question

Network speed test utility (Wired and Wireless)

Asked by: Sootah

I am looking for a network speed test utility - preferably one that will do graphing similar to the way that HD Tune graphs out hard drive read/write speeds. I've got a new draft n Linksys wireless router and I'd like to compare its speed to the old 802.11g router that I have replaced.

As a generalized speed test, I copied a large amount of data via the wireless network, but I'd like a more specialized test. The router I have is dual-band, so I'd also like to compare the speed difference (if there is any) between the 5GHz band and the 2.4GHz.

Know of any good Windows utilities for this? All I can seem to find when looking for network speed testing is the standard online broadband speed tests.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi,

Would you be interested in something similar to this: http://speedtestpro.net/ (Not a product endorsement)

Additionally, you could visit a reputed software donload site such as www.download.com and search for Internet/ Network Speed test, narrow down the results to windows O/S and Free (if you want) and check out the utilities offered.

Hope this helps.

Warm regards,
Sarang

Just as a F.Y.I, because of the way TCP works you can't really get the full advantage of high speed network connection unless you are transferring large volumes of data in a single stream/transfer.  So you may not see a big advantage between 802.11n and 802.11g if most of you data tranfers are small (under a few MB's) which most are.

Although it really does not graph you can try this free one:

The best way to test speed is to transfer very large files between computers on your home network. Internet traffic has a cap under that of the G router.

Shoot, most internet connections have a cap* under that of a B router. This is precicely why I'm looking for an app that runs locally and tests that way.

Nobody knows of any good tools that'll test speed at all? If I can find a decent one, ESPECIALLY one that graphs, then I'm golden. Doing large file copies has given me a somewhat good idea about the speed of the connection, but it's by no means precice.

Thanks again!

*Useable speed, anyway, my "10Mb" connection actually runs at like 5.6Mb in the real world

There would be a few more of such utilities there.

Hi,

Just downloaded the Networx (#2 in my previous post) and installed it on my machine. It looks decent enough.

Upon installation, you can right-click on the icon in the system tray to access the settings and other options. (you can define which connection to monitor in the settings)

Hope this helps.

Warm regards,
Sarang

You could try Iperf and Jperf.   Jperf is the GUI version.  does some decent graphing also and would rung between computers within your network.  Both Windows and Linux versions available.

What exactly are you trying to do?  No, absolutely NO speed test software of any type will be accurate.

Doing ftp's with large files will be just as accurate as any speed test you find.  Why? Because that what every speed test does.  They transfer a large file in each direction and measure how long it takes.

Again, there are problems with speed tests.

First they give you a point in time reference, not what you will get all of the time or every time.  Just because you got 10 Mbps during your speed test at 1 AM, does not mean at 9 AM you are going to get 10 Mbps.  Depending on your network at 1 AM you may be the only person on it and at 9 AM you may be one out of 100.

Speed test do large file transfers, which typically take long enough so that the TCP dynamic tuning functions have tuned the transfers to take advantage of the current conditions of the path between the two hosts.  A small file, say 100KB, will get slower throughput (bps) than a large file, say 10 MB.
