Question

Syslog traffic/bandwidth monitor and results

Asked by: t2expert

Hello, I'm hoping someone can help.

I'm looking for a WIndows app that will run on a pc/server which will read the syslog traffic from the gateway router.

I then need to be able to bring up a simple result set or grpahical view etc of the traffic used and to where etc for a certain date range or port.

Basically, my Inet conn has a limit of 10GB and I want to monitor the traffic usage over that connection.

basic confusion in the question: syslog is a different thing and bandwidth/traffic viewing is a different thing.

1. Syslog contains messages from the console. Any free syslog server will do it. It records only messages, helpful for understanding the happenings in the device including errors.

2. For bandwidth monitoring you can use MRTG/PRTG/Cacti. They are all free bandwidth utilization measurement tool. You can view them graphical format.

3. Traffic analysis is a different thing. You will need to enable netflow feature in the router and run a netflow software to get the traffic pattern e.f http is using how much and ftp is using how much and which Ip address is using what. You will get graphical output.

Hope you can find out what you need.

Thanks for both of your replies.

(surbabu140977), sorry I do understand your clarification. I'm a tech engineer. I suppose I didn't phrase it properly.

My question is I guess is there a simple enough tool to configure to allow me to see a graphical view of bandwidth used. I haven't tried the others but trying to get PRTG to work was beyond me which was quite annoying as seemingly from the reviews this was the most promising as to what I needed.

I have a Draytek 2820n router and while standard Syslog traffic (UDP 514) worked on other Syslog servers, I couldn't get PRTG to recieve the data, even being on the same port etc.
Maybe i'm doing something wrong I just can't see what.

I'll try the others but if you have any quick tips for me on how to get what I need from the above I would be greatful. A simple graph of bandwidth usage over a certain date range will do fine.

There was also another (ManageEngine_FirewallAnalyzer). This looked better but still couldn't get it to work.

We use cacti as our free corporate solution. It's the most robust free solution today and can be tweaked like anything as per the requirement.

for a windows app I'ld take something like http://www.paessler.com/prtg/ - the free version always has 10 free sensors to use. Only difference to your scenario: it uses SNMP not syslog.

For a firewall I'ld advise you the Firewall Analyzer http://www.manageengine.com/products/firewall/index.html this tool uses Syslog and tells you what you want to know. I have only experience with a Cisco ASA and Squid proxy with this software. It' a good app though with nice reports for your boss ... who does what. Almost makes netflow obsolete .. Dont know if your device is producing enough syslogs do get the traffic usage from.

Regards
Robert
