Question

Cisco 3560 Switch and Vlans - correct way to configure

Asked by: webleyaxsor

Cisco 3560 and Vlans (500 points up for grabs here)
we have 2 cisco 3560 switches connected together via fibre using a sfp module runnung as a 802.1q trunk. I have set up 3 vlans on both switches.
  |---------|                      |---------|
  | --------| __________ |---------|
      A               Fibre            B

 hostname A
 interface Vlan1
  ip address 192.168.1.254
 interface Vlan 10
  ip address 192.168.10.254
 interface Vlan 20
  ip address 192.168.20.254

interface range fa 0/1 - 12
 switchport mode access
 switchport access vlan 10
interface range fa 0/13 -24
 switchport made access
 switchport access vlan 20

I have set the GI0/1 to a 802.1q Trunk.

I have configured swith B in a very similar fassion, but given the commands
interface vlan 1
 ip address 192.168.1.253
interface vlan 10
 ip address 192.168.10.253
interface vlan 20
 ipaddress 192.168.20.253

again i have set gi0/1 to a 802.1q trunk.

I have set devices in each vlan to have a default gateway of the vlan address on router A.
My question is is the the correct way to do this, do I need to assign a ip address to each vlan on each switch or should i just assign address's on switch A, I seemd to have a few connectivity issues until I issued a "ip routing" on each switch.

It does seem to be working but is it correct.

Thanks very much

Hi,

As you have set IP Addresses on each VLAN interface on each switch, there might be some confusion as the traffic is also trunked between the two switches.

Is router A a seperate device or is it Switch A in the above example?

If it is the switch, then take the VLAN Interfaces of off Switch B and just use it as a Layer 2 device. The traffic can be routed through Switch A and back no problem.

You can set a seperate 'Management' VLAN up on each switch to allow you to Telnet to it etc. but don;t put any hosts in that VLAN.

How does that sound?

At first glance, your config looks okay. Devices on switch A should be able to communicate with devices on the same VLAN on switch B. Is that working?

As for being able to communicate with devices in a different VLAN, have you created static routes or enabled a routing protocol?

Hi webleyaxsor,
On both switches, you may consider to insert "Standby" commands to achieve HSRP.

Hope this may help to resolve your problem.

Thanks.

Hi webleyaxsor,

You can leave VLAN1 as your management VLAN which does not have any hosts attached to it. And assign IP for the 2 switches in VLAN1.

It is common to assign IP to each VLAN and this IP can be your VLAN default gateway IP. The key is that you have to enable ip routing in your switches so they know how to route.

Hi,
Do you need HSRP in your environment? If you do not need it, then you may consider to remove/shutdown all VLANs except management VLAN on one of your 3560 switch. Leave only one 3560 to become your Inter-VLAN router in your network. On layer 2, just join to the same VTP domain and trunked the uplink. On the client, set default-gateway to the VLAN interface IP address.

Hope this will help to resolve your problem.

Thanks.

Thank you for all your responses, the config above is for both switch A and B, and yes everything is working I can ping all addresses on all 3 vlans, i do not rquire hsrp in this particular solution, the reason for the 3 vlans is we have voice and data so voice is one vlan and data is the other, I did have some
confusion with the pings until i used the "ip routing" command which has created a routing table so all is now well. Thanks for all your help guys .
