Transferring a bin file to the router

Hello:
I have a brand new 2851 router. I have assigned an IP address to the GE0/1 interface. I have connected that interface to my switch that also connects to my laptop. This is to make sure that I have both addresses in the same subnet. The router's address is .55 and my laptop's address is .39. I have a bin file on the .39 laptop that I need to transfer to the .55 router. I have installed TFTP server on .39 from Solar Winds, have got the bin file in the root directory of the TFTP server but I am getting a time out error when I try copying the file. I am unable to ping .39 from .55. Suggestions please?

Two issues. Believe it or not, connect the router directly to the laptop using a standard patch cable instead of through the switch. The interface of the 2800 is autoxover.
Also, be aware that there is a size limit of 32Mb on your Solarwinds tftp server. If the .bin file is larger than that (and many newer ones are) then you will get part way through and fail. Search and find "tftpd32" and it works very well.

Also, be sure that the interface g0/1 is not administratively shutdown. Use "no shut" interface command..

Maybe the ports on the SW are in different vlans. If both pc's have the same netmask you should be able to ping them or at least see an arp entry.
Try to connect your pc directly into the router.

solarwinds tftp server has some security options. Load up solarwinds and go to the options page and ensure you are set to transmit & receive files.

also turn of any firewall you have on your laptop

Thank you all for your response. I have connected the router directly to my laptop. Have placed the file on the TFTP root directory. File size is 27.1 MB. I have tried both TFTP server from Solar Winds as well as TFTPd32. I can ping the router from my laptop and vice versa. I continue to get the error as follows:
%Error opening tftp://172.17.16.39/c2800nm-spservicesk9-mz.123-14.T7 (No such file or directory). The file is in the root directory. Any idea if I am missing something? Please help. Thank you.

And I forgot to mention the error on the TFTP server. It says:
TFTP connected from 172.17.16.55:58218 on 2/4/2008 10:20:02 AM, binary, GET. Transmission failed. Could not find file 'C:\Documents and Settings\ Pooja|Desktop\Bin File\ c2800nm-spservicesk9-mz.123-14.T7'. Plus all firewalls are turned off. I am sure it is something simple that I am missing. Suggestions?

Hum... is Windows Vista your operating system?

In Vista TFTP Server must be run as an administrator or it won't have permission to start TFTP service... Could that be your issue?

Check the status of the TFTP server, make sure it's not stopped.
try this:
CR-1721#copy startup-config tftp
Address or name of remote host []? 192.168.0.11 <ip address of tftp server>

Hi neos2k1: I think you nailed it this time. When I tried copying the start up config, i am getting the error that Non-volatile configuration memory invalid or not present. Guess I have to check the router now.

That was not a serious error. I had not copied the running config to startup config. I did that and I was able to copy the start up config to my laptop with no trouble. Why then am I having trouble going from laptop to router?

I am trying to do a redownload of the file. Since I am able to transfer from router to laptop, the reverse should be possible logically speaking. Since it is not working, I am wondering if the file is corrupted. I am doing a download now.

It worked this time around. I guess it was a corrupt file. But the other weird thing is that the router did not ask me if i wanted to erase flash before copying. Now I have both the bin files on my flash. Thanks all for the help.

It didn't ask you because there was enough space on the flash for the new image as well. It will only ask you in case there is not enough space on the flash.
