Create 2nd LAN for Server Backups

We have 4 servers (Running 2003/2000) (multihomed) + workstations.
We currently have 2x24 Gigabit HP Switches in use.

I've heard people mention that they have 2 LANs in the office, 1 for all the office (Servers, workstations, printers, etc), and a 2nd one for high speed transfers between the servers.

I am now about to put in place a 'real time' backup server (Backup Exec) and was wanting to find out how to setup this 2nd LAN and how to use it for server to server communication only.


I'm guessing that I would get another high speed switch and plug the servers into this one & give them static IP addresses? How to get inter-server communication to use this 2nd network (and prevent other workstations, printers, etc from using it) I'm not sure about though.

When I have done it in the past, all the servers need to be multihomed, except for the backup server (which can be multihomed or not).  Pick a separate subnet for the  multihomed NICs.  Simply connect them to a new switch or to a separate VLAN.  If you do not multihome the backup server, it will only be able to see the second NIC on the same subnet as it is using on each server.

ok, that was along a similar path to what I was thinking.

My existing LAN (call it "LAN1") is 192.168.1.0/24
DG: 192.168.1.2
DNS 192.168.1.2

So the additional LAN for the servers (call it "LAN2") I would setup as, for eg, 192.168.101.0/24 and set the IP addressing manually on the 2nd NIC of each server that will connect through a separate 8 port switch (just my preference over a VLAN).

What settings would I use on the secondary NICs?
(assuming I have the servers 2nd NIC addressing on the same host number, eg "x.x.x.2")
LAN: 192.168.101.0/24
DG: ?
DNS: 192.168.101.2 ??


How do I ensure that the server connects with the 2nd NIC instead of just going through the LAN that is shared by everyone?
My initial thought on this one is:
- Network Connections
- Advanced Settings
- Move LAN2 to the top of the Connections list
- Move LAN1 to 2nd in list

If the backup server is not multihomed, it will only be able to see the 192.168.101.0 network, so you don't have to worry about whether it does to the other network.  That's the simplest way.

As to default gateway, that does not matter.  You are only using the second network for backups, so you will only be hitting local addresses.  The default gateway is used to get to remote networks.  as to DNS, you can actually use the DNS server on one of your multihomed servers and just create a new zone.

You basically have the concept.  The only thing that could be complicated is if you want the backup server to be able to reach the internet as well.  To do that without multihoming the backup server, you need to use either one of the multihomed servers NICs as the gateway and then setup routing on that server.  The other option which is even easier is if you have a free DMZ port on your firewall.  Set that port to the 192.168.101.0 network and make the DMZ port the default gateway on each server on that subnet.

That makes sense.
The backup server will need to access the internet as I will be taking an online backup from the backup server.
Could I just configure the 192.168.101.x/24 NIC on the Backup server to have a DG of 192.168.101.2? Would that achieve the same effect?

Yes, as long as 192.168.101.2 is your DMZ NIC or is somehow routed to the firewall.
