The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

crossover/straight cable/or uplink?
Tags: crossover cable, switches, uplink
http://www.alliedtelesyneurope.com/site/files/supportdocs/at1086   This is the link to the install guide for a Centrecom FS708.  My en1 connects to a gigabit auto md1-mdi-x 8 port switch with a straight cable. I am a little confused by the text in this guide vs the diagrams.  How do I cascade two CentreCom FS708 Do I need a straight cable to the first Centrecom. What port should the cable go into . What kind of cable links the two together? And what kind of cable leaves the last CentreCom heading towards some generic nway switches?

Your link doesn't appear to be working. However, with auto-mdi, the port will automatically configure itself to work with whatever cable you use. According to the documentation for this model switch, all ports support auto-mdi. So basically, connect the switches with any ethernet cable, and it should work.

hi,
I suppose the correct link is:
http://www.alliedtelesyneurope.com/site/files/supportdocs/at10864a.pdf

as for the question, fs708 has port 8 with auto mdi-mdix function, so it is recommended to use port 8 for uplinking. you can also use ports 1-7 for uplinks, but then you should take correct (straight or crossed) cable.

if your 'some generic nway switch' supports auto mdi-mdix - you can use any cable and any port of fs708 (because when connecting two devices it is enough only one of them to support auto mdi-mdix feature in order to use any cable)

First, let me make sure I know the basics. An mdi-x port means crossed in the switch. So an MDI-X to a Mdi-x would need a crossover cable. Generally, then mdi-x goes to a station. Mdi, which means the same as an uplink, does not cross internally so two switches  may be cascaded together using a straight cable. When I read the text, I saw that port 8 could do either. IE it could go to a station or it could go to another mdi uplink port on another switch. It is the figures on pp.12 that are confusing me. If cascading carries the same concept as daisy chaining then I am befuddled as to what the 9th port does(labeled on switch as"to hub." Ideally, it would be nice to be able to use that 9th port as, because I have 8 stations in each row, I lose ports in the next row to feed the first each time I connect to a subsequent row. Figure 5 shows that 9th  port crossing over to port 7 on the lower pictured switch which is immutably mdi-x with a straight cable.
     So if I start with my gigabit desk 8 port that has the auto mdi-mdi-x on all ports, I could run a straight cable to the top pictured switch to its port 8. Then using that 9th port I would use a straight cable to go to port 7 on the lower switch? That is where I get lost. I guess it is because I could not find in the manual a definition of what that 9th port labled  "to hub" is. The only clue  I see is in the pp 13 diagram that shows that port 9"to hub" going to the corporate backbone. That is where my understanding is stuck.

PC's = mdi
Servers = mdi
switches = mdi-x
hubs = mdi-x

mdi-x to mdi-x = crossover
mdi to mdi = crossover
mdi to mdi-x = straight through

On some devices, they will have one port with two connectors: an mdi and an mdi-x. You can use either one, but not both at the same time. The idea is that if you want to use that port to connect to an end station, you would use the "to PC" (mdi-x) port and a straight through cable. But if you want to connect to another switch, you would use the "to hub" (mdi) port and a straight through cable.

You know I must be getting a little better at this because I guessed that might be the case but didn't want to sound stupid so I didn't write it out in my last post. Basically, then, there is really not a port 9 at all but rather two port 8/s: one mdi-x and one mdi. So since my first switch is auto sensing would it not make sense to run a straight cable to the mdi-x port 8 on the first fs708. Then connect the two fs708/s by going from the mdi "to hub" port to port 7 with a straight cable. Then use the mdi-x port 8 to the generic nway with a straight cable.   I think that verbal description matches their diagram. Then if  can find my receipts and the nway turns out not to be auto mdi-x and mdi, I would use crossover cables from there on out.
