Question

How to create a VLAN for guest internet access

Asked by: Rowdyone52

Experts,

We have an HP ProCurve 5412 swtich and 3 Cisco 2800 routers.  We also have a main branch which needs to supply non-employees internet access from time to time.  Our main brach is on a 10.10.x.x network which connects to a CoLocaton on a 10.11.x.x network then goes to to the internet.  I would like to create a VLAN on our 10.10.x.x network so that we can grant internet access to non-employees but they will not have access to any other network resources.  I know this possible with our equipment but I have no idea how to implement this.  Can anyone help me?

You will need to setup the VLAN on the switch, by identifying the names of each VLAN and which switchports belong to which VLAN.

You will need to setup a trunk port on the switch that goes back to a router.
You will need to setup subinterfaces on the router for the interface that is connected to the switch, and then setup proper routing.

I cannot give you the exact code/buttons to push on your devices since I do not know how your current configuration is setup, but those are the essential steps.

Creating the trunk is where I'm lost the most.  I don't understand how to associate vlans with a trunk port.

a trunk port will (basically always) by default carry all VLAN's that a switch has unless you identify it otherwise.

Not sure on the HP switches, but in the Cisco switches you can do something like

switchport trunk allow vlan 2-5,7

to allow only specific ones (2,3,4,5,7 in this case)

What is the difference in tagged and untagged ports?  The command you just showed me, does that mean that those ports are now capable of being trunks?  meaning will all vlans attempt to use those ports to connect to a router?

Those sites explain VLANS pretty well.. I actually gotta jet for now but I should be able to get back to u later in the week..  hopefully someone else can jump in to help until then..

Those articles helped out a lot.  I think I've got the switch part figured out.  As a test I put one port in a new vlan then I tagged another port on both vlans.  When I connected the router to the shared port then there was no network traffic flowing from the switch to the router.  Do I need to configure the router with 2 sub-interfaces for both vlans to get connectivity.

Please someone look at the attached screen shot and let me know if I have the switch configured right.

My guess is that when connecting HP and Cisco you need to make the HP-side untagged on the DEFAULT_VLAN 1.
So here, as the link to Cisco seems to be F24: Untagged DEFAULT_VLAN and Tagged Guest_VLAN.
(when connecting HP to HP you have a little more freedom in this regard)

Ok, thanks for the info jburgaard.  That fixed my problem with the main network not being able to access the router.  Now I have both vlans up and running.  However, there is one snag.  the vlan for public use (vlan_guest) is able to access my entire network.  How do I block access to the 10.10.x.x network and to the 10.11.x.x network from the public network?

by: killbradPosted on 2008-05-01 at 07:52:08ID: 21479175

In the router, you need to make sure the routes/access lists for those networks only allow it to go out to the internet, not talk to each other.

Well in the end it worked out that the guest vlan had access to our network.  We put a wireless firewall/router on that network and blocked access for guests and allowed access for corporate employees.  Thanks to everyone for all your help.
