Question

how to advertise directly connected routes to ospf?

Hi experts,
I have a cisco 2960 switch with vlans and from here trunk port to a cisco 2800 router.
Even the configuration on the end-hosts are the same in area 1 and area 2, i can only ping one of them. server-side are in ospf area 1 and host are in different areas.please see the topology and tests i made as attached(for the sake of simplicity i removed the switch). i think problem is with cisco ospf routing. any ideas?

could you show me the config?

why you use 2 areas in this case the aera0 is enough

actually the end systems are micro-wave devices and configured in different areas, that's why i had to configure different areas for them. server has 3 interfaces and will use every of them to reach the networks via different routing prtocols: ospf, isis, directly etc. there area actually 5 end-hosts, in the topology i just simplified them.please see the config below.
What i don't understand is the configurations area the same on the end-devices, however i can only ping one of them from the server.

Please can you post the routing tables of each of the routers.

you can see from routing tables of the end-devices that on fthe first one there is a route like
10.56.104.8/29 10.56.202.6 UG 677 eth1 0
which is the interface of the the cisco facing to the server, but on the second device there is no such route, so i cannot ping it from the server.

p.s.  in case of bad poor readibility of the codes i attached them as txt files as well

When you did a tracert to 10.56.3.1, the source IP address was 10.56.103.10

This source doesn't appear in the 10.56.3.1 routing table, so there is no route back.

Are you running OSPF on your end devices?

yes ospf is running on the end-devices. when i do a traceroute from the router giving the source 10.56.104.14, it still doesnt work either, because this route doesnt exist in its route table either! What I want to do is to advertise the 10.56.104.8/29 network to this device, like it is doing it for the first device very well.

Do you have a full OSPF adjacency between the failing device and the main router? Are you using OSPF passive interfaces anywhere?

You don't seem to have any active interfaces in area 0.0.0.0?

Area 0.0.0.0 is the backbone area. Routes from other areas cannot be passed between areas other than area 0.

yes area 0.0.0.0. is used only for configuring the server-side interface. the idea is that server can communicate with other areas. we dont want other devices on other areas to talk to aech other. i want to distribute server-side interfaces to ospf areas, so that server can also reach them.

Multi area OSPF will not function properly without area 0.0.0.0. This is the reason your having the problem. Am I correct in saying that the two devices that are not communicating area in different areas?

Routes from other area must get passed into area 0.0.0.0 before they can get passed back out to other areas.

You can use the ospf area command to filter routes between areas.

there is arae 0.0.0.0 and its only used for server interface.  server interface in this area0 will communicate with other deviced only. the devices will not communicate each other. from the server i can communicate with the device in area 10.56.202.1, but not with the others. that is my problem

I think this is what you need to do.

Make sure you have an adjacency formed between your server in area 0 and the router. This isn't the case at the moment.

Create a prefix-list, which is a list of the IP's you want to pass from area 0 to each of the other areas.

ip prefix-list <filter name> permit x.x.x.x/x


router ospf 1

ip prefix list did not work. I still wonder what is the difference btw. area 10.56.202.0 and the others, I can only ping devices in tis area.

Hello All,
I finally found the solution:)
I removed interface 10.56.104.14 from the area 0.0.0.0 and 1 put
redistribute connected subnets under the ospf and it worked!

I've noticed something from the show ip ospf database routers output. Some of the advertising routers are not reachable.
