Question

Migrating to VLAN solution

Asked by: irmando

Hello,

We are planning to change our current topology to use VLAN.  The main reason is due to relocation and hence not to restrict groups of users to the same location or floors in the building.  Please refer to attached diagram (simplified version).

There is a router, Cisco 2611XM and several different models of HP ProCurve switches.

Router info:
Cisco IOS Software, C2600 Software (C2600-IPBASE-M), Version 12.4(3i), RELEASE ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 12.2(8r) [cmong 8r], RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
ROM: C2600 Software (C2600-I-M), Version 12.3(23), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc5)
System image file is "flash:c2600-ipbase-mz.124-3i.bin"

There are currently many interfaces on the router, each for one subnet.  Therefore, to migrate to a VLAN solution, there is no need to use "Router-on-a-stick" approach.  Can I retain the same interfaces on the router and configure VLANs on the Core Switch (diagram) to connect to these interfaces?  I believe I have to configure the VLANs with different IP addresses according to the subnets.

Vlan10: Marketing, Vlan20: Production, Vlan30: HR - for example.

Then, from the Core Switch, I will connect to the other switches on different parts of the building via a TRUNK link, passing through all VLANS.  On those remote switches, I will configure the VLAN assignment for each port.

Please advise:

1.  If there is any limitation on the router IOS to implement this?
2.  Do I need to make any changes on the router since there is no TRUNK between it and the CORE switch?
3.  If I have HSRP configured (a redundant router is available and connected to a separate link to Internet, do I even have to worry about it and make some change to the configuration?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You *can* do it without any configuration changes on the router simply by running each of the 2621XM's interfaces into a switch port on the core switch that is configured for the appropriate VLAN.  The HSRP standby router can similarly be configured to run its interfaces directly to the switch with no requirement for modification.

That said...  assuming your new core switch is a layer 3 switch, there are a few disadvantages too.  You're using six physical connections to the switch when you really only need to be using two and your routing between VLANs is limited to the 100Mb/s bandwidth of the routers' interfaces.

If your core switch is a layer 2 switch though, this isn't a bad configuration.  Router-on-a-stick with a trunk to the 2621XM would limit your inter-VLAN traffic to a total of 100Mb/s where the sacrifice of a few extra ports gets you more bandwidth for this sort of thing.

Thanks for the reply.  You mentioned "six physical links when you really only need to be using two".  This is refering to the core switch connecting to 2 routers with HSRP, correct?

by: jodylemoinePosted on 2009-10-15 at 06:24:43ID: 25580241

Correct.  Each router has three interfaces coming back to the core, which makes a total of six if you have a second doing HSRP and configured similarly to the first.  If the switch is doing all of your inter-VLAN routing and the two routers are just providing your internet connection, you can get away with each router only having one connection back to the switch for a total of two.
