The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

windows 2003 cluster - unable to ping servers - vlan

I am trying to setup Exhange 2k7 running CCR - I have 4 servers for exchange:
I have 4 servers that I will (meaning they don't have exchange on them now) install the following roles:
1 Hub transport (HT)
1 Client access server (CAS)
2 Mailbox servers clustered

All servers are dell poweredge 2950's with Intel Pro/1000 (driver version 9.12.13.0) PT Dual Port cards + onboard broadcaom BCM5708C

On each server I am teaming the intel nics using adaptive load balencing
All the servers are on the same vlan
All servers are on SP2 with the latest patches + .net framerwork as of 2/22/2008
All servers are connected to a cisco switch
Cisco IOS Software, Catalyst 4500 L3 Switch Software (cat4500-IPBASEK9-M), Version 12.2(31)SGA, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc3)
I have several Vlans and have no problem traversing them.

I have hard set the ports to 1000 full duplex -

Here is the problem:  From my desktop (vlan X) I cannot ping the clustered mailbox servers (vlan Y) by name or IP - I do an NSLOOKUP and the name resloves and the IP resolves.  I can ping the other two servers (ht&cas) and RDP into them.  Once I am on either ht or cas I can then RDP into either mailbox server.
I have tried 'unteaming" the nics - doesn't make a difference.

I can also ping the server IP addresses from the switch that my desktop is connected to.

I don't have a firewall on the two clustered backend servers.

Let me know what other information you need.

Thanks.

Make sure the gateway addresses on the 2 servers in question are correctly set. Sounds like they are not. If you can ping them from the same subnet but not another it means that they are not routing correctly.

02.22.2008 at 11:01AM PST, ID: 20960267
The gateway is set the same on all 4 servers.  I just double checked.  When I go to close the tcp/ip properties I do get a message:

"Warming - Multiple default gateways are intended to provide redudancy to a single network (such as an an intranet or the internet). They will not function properly when the gateways are on two seperate, disjoint networks (such as one on your intranet and one on the internet). Do you want to save this configuration?"

I assume that has to do with the nics being teamed or the fact that they are clustered.  I am leaning toward the nics being teamed because I get the same error on the ht and cas server as well as the mailbox clustered server.

ipconfig from ht server:

Can you ping past the gateway from the troubled machine?

02.22.2008 at 11:05AM PST, ID: 20960305
can you ping the interface of a different vlan?

02.22.2008 at 11:11AM PST, ID: 20960368
bhnmi -

from the troubled machine I can ping yahoo, my DC (on a different vlan) but not my workstation (different vlan than my dc).  I can also ping from my DC to the troubled machine.

from the ht (good machine) I can ping my workstation, dc, anything.

02.22.2008 at 11:15AM PST, ID: 20960406
from the switches IOS can you ping the trouble machine and your workstation?

02.22.2008 at 11:17AM PST, ID: 20960419
Also, make sure there is not an incorrect static route on the trouble machine for the workstations subnet.

02.22.2008 at 11:25AM PST, ID: 20960504
yes I can ping both my ws and troubled machine from my switches

when i do a route print from the troubled machine I don't get any persistant routes, if that is what you were looking for.

Try settings a static route for the workstation vlan.

02.22.2008 at 11:44AM PST, ID: 20960709
here is the command I typed in:
route add 10.199.133.0 mask 255.255.255.0 10.199.133.1

shouldn't I see something in the persistant routes?

sorry - it has been a long week - my brain is mush...

Can you explain your sentance "Need to set the gateway to the vlan interface IP of the vlan the server is on."?

Why is it that the other two servers aren't having this problem?

We are just testing at this point. For some reason the server is not routing to the workstation subnet.

So we need a route like this.

10.199.133.0    255.255.255.0     10.199.128.129      10.10.10.10      1
