Question

Convert desktop to filestorage

Asked by: DarkJager

HI lads

I have a HPO desktop, fairly new and reliable HW including a gigabit Ethernet connection.
I have be dabbling in openfiler and have found it to be very reliable and easy to use.

This dabbling was done in a lad using a stand alone cisco switch on which i was getting 1 gigabit connectivity on openfiler.

Now that I am implementing it to our site, connect to the same model switch, cisco 3750, I cant get it beyond 100mb/s.

I've tried manually setting speed and duplex on both side to exactly the same and turning off auto sensing.
Openfiler returns the following regarding the connections on both ends suggesting it can take the higher settings:

         Supported ports: [ TP ]
        Supported link modes:   10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                                100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
                                1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full
        Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
        Advertised link modes:  10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                                100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
                                1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full
        Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
        Speed: 100Mb/s
        Duplex: Full
        Port: Twisted Pair
        PHYAD: 1
        Transceiver: internal
        Auto-negotiation: on
        Supports Wake-on: g
        Wake-on: g
        Current message level: 0x000000ff (255)
        Link detected: yes

So it can take 1000mb/s on both side but wont go beyond 100mb/s

This desktop did have XP on it. I have removed it from the domain by changing to a workgroup when connected to the domain.

I have deleted the mac address of this desktop from the arp table on the cisco switches.
I have knowledge of most IT equipment but am still working/learning on configuring them together.

I think I may be missing on how to distinguish between a workstation and a server. Servers running Server 2003 are already connected to the network and are using 1000mb/s.

Any help to get the openfiler server running at 1000mb/s would be appreciated.
Also an explanation on how to distinguish between servers and desktops who have gig connections would be great.

Thanks in advance

Dark

Please set booth sides to 1000M full-duplex!

by: DarkJagerPosted on 2009-09-03 at 02:25:32ID: 25248942

Thanks for the quick responce ikalmar

I have tried this already with no connectivity being the solution.
If its connected in the lab it goes to 1000mb/s, but in production I feel its being restricted to 100mb/s.

When configuring a network how to you make sure servers get a 1000mb conenction while desktops remain at 100mb eventhough their conencted to the same router.

Yes I did not configure the network and cant contact thoes who did.

What kind of switch do you have?

by: DarkJagerPosted on 2009-09-03 at 02:48:15ID: 25249029

We have a combination of 2960's and 3750 both 1000gig switches.
Could static mac addresses be is use here.
Servers have static IP enabled, I have used static IP on the openfiler Desktop

by: DarkJagerPosted on 2009-09-03 at 04:32:51ID: 25249513

Servers get 1gig connection
Desktops get 100mb connection
All are conencted to either 2960's or 3750's

Now most desktops only have 100mb adapter anyway
A few have 1gig adapter

One of these I'm using as a openfiler server but cant get it to run at 1gig on production network but auto configs to 1gig in the lab!

What can be preventing openfiler from getting a 1gig connection on the production network?

Anyone have a soution/idea on this.
Could it be a domin/cisco restriction to block this mac address from utilising its full 1gig capabilities.

This has been killing me for a while now.

Basically I feel only allowed mac address are capable fo connecting at a gig.
Or a port range on the switch can use a gig connection.

If you were setting up 2x3750 and 2x2960's, both capable of 1 gig on all ports, how would you restrict it to desktops only having 100mb and server having a gig.
do this without setting each individual port setting.

Its not vlan, as openfiler is on server vlan but still no gig connection

its not manually set port settings on both sides, failed
Help would be appriciated.
