The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Convert desktop to filestorage

HI lads

I have a HPO desktop, fairly new and reliable HW including a gigabit Ethernet connection.
I have be dabbling in openfiler and have found it to be very reliable and easy to use.

This dabbling was done in a lad using a stand alone cisco switch on which i was getting 1 gigabit connectivity on openfiler.

Now that I am implementing it to our site, connect to the same model switch, cisco 3750, I cant get it beyond 100mb/s.

I've tried manually setting speed and duplex on both side to exactly the same and turning off auto sensing.
Openfiler returns the following regarding the connections on both ends suggesting it can take the higher settings:

         Supported ports: [ TP ]
        Supported link modes:   10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                                100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
                                1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full
        Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
        Advertised link modes:  10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                                100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
                                1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full
        Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
        Speed: 100Mb/s
        Duplex: Full
        Port: Twisted Pair
        PHYAD: 1
        Transceiver: internal
        Auto-negotiation: on
        Supports Wake-on: g
        Wake-on: g
        Current message level: 0x000000ff (255)
        Link detected: yes

So it can take 1000mb/s on both side but wont go beyond 100mb/s

This desktop did have XP on it. I have removed it from the domain by changing to a workgroup when connected to the domain.

I have deleted the mac address of this desktop from the arp table on the cisco switches.
I have knowledge of most IT equipment but am still working/learning on configuring them together.

I think I may be missing on how to distinguish between a workstation and a server. Servers running Server 2003 are already connected to the network and are using 1000mb/s.

Any help to get the openfiler server running at 1000mb/s would be appreciated.
Also an explanation on how to distinguish between servers and desktops who have gig connections would be great.

Thanks in advance

Dark
