The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

auto detect proxy

Tags: proxy, detect, auto
I have multiple computers using internet explorer 7.
The home page for all these computers is on a Linux server.
The proxy is also the same Linux server.
How can I make the clients auto detect the proxy.
No transparent proxy answers please.
Since the home page is set the same for all the clients I was hoping to somehow use that to set the proxy.
The Linux server is running php and Apache.

Open IE, goto Tools, Internet Options, Connections Tab, Click Lan Settings Button,

There are check boxes.,

Check the Automatically detect Settings checkbox.

P.S.

Proxy server, and Apache, PHP don't coincide. They are different Apps all together.

You can have a Proxy redirect to a web page, AKA your apache server. But they are not related.

This has to be done from the server and it can be done that way.
I'm using squid proxy.

A proxy server cannot for detection. If you want your entire network to be forced into detection,

You have to use a GPO to force IE to be configured to using Auto Detect Proxy.

Yes I know, your proxy server, "Squid Proxy" is setup to redirect to a PHP page that is hosted on your Apache Server. That doesn't mean the two products are integrated into each other.

The proxy detection has to do with the client setup, and Squid Proxy, Apache, nor PHP can force this.

Either go to each computer and setup Auto Detection or use GPO's to push out the Auto Detection Setting in IE.

> How can I make the clients auto detect the proxy.

You have to use Web Proxy Automatic Discovery protocol -- see http://www.microsoft.com/technet/isa/2004/plan/automaticdiscovery.mspx

I'm reading things about wpad.dat and using javascript to set proxies for ie.
Selecting auto detection doesn't work, I have to put in the information.
I want this to work in other places from the server, not just my location.
That is the reason I'm trying to get it to work this way.

What is this code about?

require_once "HTTP/Request.php";
$req =& new HTTP_Request("http://example.com/");
$req->setProxy("proxy.example.com", 8080);

And this code?

function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
{
   if (isInNet(host, "10.10.20.0", "255.255.255.0")) {
      return "DIRECT";
   } else {
      if (shExpMatch(url, "http:*"))
         return "PROXY 10.10.20.124:3128" ;
      if (shExpMatch(url, "https:*"))
         return "PROXY 10.10.20.124:3128" ;
      if (shExpMatch(url, "ftp:*"))
         return "PROXY 10.10.20.124:3128" ;
      return "DIRECT";
   }
}

That just allows auto detect to work, it won't force auto detection on computers that haven't got that check box clicked.

Plus, you can't install that on a Linux Server.

Squid has it's own auto detection stuff, which I'm not to familiar with, but her DC server can tell her clients IE to use the auto detection.

Also if anyone uses FireFox, they have to be manually configured, it's not a centrally managed app.

nplib:

AFAIK, IE is set to auto-detect by default.  To make it work you can either configure DHCP server to provide the URL, or (if you don't you DHCP) create a virtual web host "wpad.your.domain" that will serve wpad.dat.  This all can be done in Linux (and I guarantee that).

I didn't say WDAP can't be used on Linux, I said that the link you directed her to is for Microsoft stuff which can't be used on linux.  I also said that linux has it's one implenation of WDAP which I don't know much about.

As for IE being set to auto detect by default is not true anymore, it used to be.
When you first launch IE since SP2 for XP, it will bring you to Internet connection Wizard. Depending on the option you choose it will set those values accordingly.

Well, Microsoft invented this protocol (but the proxy autoconfig idea was created by Netscape) :-)
