The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Can't log on after changing from domain to workgroup configuration

I took home from my office my xw8000 (Windows XP) workstation.  It was connected to a network with a windows domain using Small Business Server.  I wanted to use it in a work group configuration at home so I used the utility to change the network connection type from domain to a workgroup called "WORKGROUP".  Now I can't log on to the computer.  I didn't change the username or password information, assuming that these would work for the computer.  What can I do now?

At the logon prompt, right beneath the login Name and password -- Did you select the local computer name?

When you were connected to the domain, you were using a domain account to login.  Now that you've removed the computer from the domain, you'll need to know a username/password that would've existed on the local machine when it was setup.  Typically there will be an 'Administrator' user, but you'll need to know that password that goes with it.

the item badmanij is talking about is usually labeled 'Log On To', but if you've removed the computer from the domain, you won't see that as an option anymore.

Well, I tried the adminstrator username and password that worked on the domain, but wasn't successful.  Would reinstalling windows from a cold boot work?  But, I don't want to lose installed programs on the C drive.

What about buying a new drive, installing it as the new C drive and then installing windows on that?

Any other suggestions?

the domain admin/password will not work

when the PC was first setup, it would've had its own Administrator account with a password - that's the one you need.

I'm not sure what installing over-top would do - it may ask for the username/password, so it may not help.

Installing another copy of Windows on the same drive but in a different directory would give you access to the file-system, but it would not pull in the actual program installations.  Nor would putting a new drive in the system.

There used to be tools to 'hack' the password, or to overwrite the password - I'm not sure how well they work with WinXP.

What about returning the computer to the domain (take it back to the office)?  Will I be able to use the domain log on somehow (will I get a choice to log on locally or onto the network)?

I don't know of a way to add a PC to a domain without first logging into it

What can I do to log onto this computer?  Are there computer professionals that can help me or a software solution that I can implement myself? (UltimateBootCD or BartPE?)

I have increased the point value.

you might want to check the following thread - there are a few suggestions which may apply in your scenario

I will award points to CMYScott.  Password recovery goes unsolved at this time.  I have tried EBCD (Emergency Boot CD) but can't use the password reset utility sincet my scsi driver isn't one of the supported one's (apparently).  I plan next to try ophcrack but I might run into the same problem.  If necessary I will check with a local IT vendor.

While I certainly caused this problem with the changes I made, it would be great if the Windows OS asked you for a response to a secret question, like online banking sites, so that you could still log on if a password is forgotten.
