I currently have a private Class C network at the school where I work. I need to look at enlarging it so; I think I need to move to a Class B network. The real question is one of subnetting and the value of it in my environment. The only router as such is my firewall appliance and some small wireless APs. I think 1500 host address will more than adequately supply for future growth. I will be happy to supply any additional information as needed to make an informed decision. The questions so far are:
Why would I want to subnet the private address range more than once or make more networks? Advantages? Scenarios?
Assuming 1500 host addresses are enough, what would be a good Class B network range and corresponding subnet mask?
Based on answers, I may have some more questions.
