Question

The system cannot log you on now because the domain ***** is not available

Asked by: cnl83

Im changing about 25 computers over to a SBS 2003. I have already changed over about 10, but im stuck on this one machine running windows XP. All the other machines have not had any problems logging in. When I press ctr alt del, enter the password it says "The system cannot log you on now because the domain ***** is not available".
I can log onto the machine locally as administrator, but it will not logon to the domain from the login screen.  I checked the NIC, and it is not set to save power ect. I deleted the user account and re-added the user, went to My Computer, Network ID, rejoined the domain, rebooted, and Bam same thing.

Im using the DNS that my ISP provided. The SBS is not the DNS server. So its an external DNS.

OK. There could be several reasons that makes this happens.

Anyway, please Log-On the PC with the Local Administrator.
Then check the Network Properties of the PC, Start > Control PAnel > Network Connections.
Make sure the Network connection of the PC has NO STATIC IP Configured.
And make sure the Network Connection on the properties telling you that the network is CONNECTED.

Second thing you can try, Remove the Domain Properties on System Properties > Computer Name.
Re-add the PC to the Domain. and try  to re-LOGON after you do that.

That's all for now and hope this helps.

You should be getting your IP address (and DNS) from the SBS server. If you are getting it from a router I would disable the DHCP server on the router so you can get the information from the SBS server. When you get an ip address from SBS it will set the DNS to the SBS server. This should solve all your issues.

Good luck.

Your internal PCs MUST use your SBS server's DNS to work properly.  The SBS server DNS contains the information needed for the XP systems to resolve your Active Directory properly, so your XP systems need to be pointed to it.  Your SBS DNS will properly (if your network settings in SBS are correct) forward external request to the internet, so you do not need to use your ISP's DNS.
