Question

Can my 192.168.0.110 address remain constant - NOT change ??

Asked by: DFlaschen

I have a home-office network.
There are about 7 computers.
They each have an address: 192.168.0.3   and  192.168.0.9 and so on.
ON eof the computers is 192.168.0.100.  I want this one to never change.  I don't care if the other ones change.
I am running Windows XP Pro.
How can I accomplish this?
Thank you

Two Options:

1. Create a DHCP Reservation in your router for that system.
2.  Set the IP Address statically (run IPCONFIG /ALL on a command prompt and copy the information down - then enter it as a static address with the related info).  Then make sure your DHCP server has an exclusion set so it never tries to hand out that address OR that the scope ENDS before 100 or after 100.

To set the static IP for the specific computer, go to control panel -> network connections -> Local area connection(or whatever it is called on your pc) -> Right click / Properties -> Select Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) then Properties -> Select "Use the following IP address, and enter details:
IP address: 192.168.0.100
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (this might be different depending on your router)
Then the for the DNS enter your ISP's DNS addresses.

Andypun:  How do I determine the DNS addresses for my ISP (which is Comcast)?
Thanks

I guess you missed my comment - which says to do just what andypun says AND explains how to get the information you need.  Andy's comment is incomplete as it could create an ip conflict.

I'll repeat what I said:
run IPCONFIG /ALL on a command prompt and copy the information down - then enter it as a static address with the related info

for DNS address on your internal network, unless you have DNS server yourself, use the gateway address. It will forward all your DNS requests to the ISP.
I am assuming you have a router of some kind?
also, most of the routers have DHCP server enabled in them. You can configure reservation there. This way you dont have to assign the static address to your computer.
For that you will need MAC address of the network card. You can get it from the output of ipconfig /all command.
look for "physical address" line that looks something like 01-fe-b4-88-aa-15
Then you can assign specific IP address to correspond to this physical address. And every time this machine connects to the network, it will have the same address.
However, if this is the server you are talking about, probably setting the address statically is better idea.

Leew:
I did not miss your comment.  My problem was that I did not know how to do the things you'd suggested.  I did know how to do the things Andypun had suggested.  I need to print all of these answers out, and do a bit of studying.

If you don't know, ASK... I try to follow up.

To properly answer, I need more information - what router are you using?

by: LisijPosted on 2009-05-28 at 10:12:04ID: 24495503

only thing that hasnt been suggested how to do is hot to run ipconfig.
sooo...

start-run...
cmd
ipconfig /all

you may have to scroll up a little
----------
and we do need to know a lttle more about your setup.
we need to know the manufacturer and the model of the router.
who gives away the addresses? the router itself, or you have the server?
how to configure IP settings statically, see Andy's post. However, as i said, you dont have to worry about finding out DNS address of your ISP, as i said, you can use your gateway address, and the router will forward DNS requests to the ISP server itself. IF you still want to know the ISP DNS address, it can be checked out of the router settings. and for that we need... that's right, the model of the router.

Status - so far ...
Thanks for everything.
In the middle of all this my D-Link DI-604 died hard.  No lights at all when I power it up.
So, I am now using a different router, a Belkin F5D6231-4.
I figure it's about the same - in terms of these instructions.
I'll let everyone know if it worked - or if I have any questions.
Thanks
