DNS and DHCP with Netware

I am reading a book that says that DNS and DHCP can not
run  on the same server that provides file services when
Novell  Netware is the NOS.  What does this mean?
Merely that the  LAN must use more than one server?  

Do systems that use Netware have to have client
computers  configured manually?

This is not true.  DNS and DHCP are services that are supported by Netware out-of-the-box.  I have configured many servers for fileserving, DNS, DHCP, mail (groupwise) and firewall/proxy/cache (bordermanager) all on one physical server.

Your book is wrong, Netware will support, and many of us do this, DNS, DHCP, and other utilities on the same server.  Managing those utilities and services so as to not bog down a server, is part of the job.  On the other hand, it is good practice to have more than one server, unless you have SBS, so as to have replicas of NDS.  NW6 provides no limits on servers, I like to keep one for utilities, such as DNS/DHCP, printing, etc, and keep file services on another, but there certainly is no mandate to do so.

Regarding clients, it is true that pre-NetWare v6, the best client to use for Windoze machines accessing a NetWare server is the NetWare Client 32, which Micro$oft obviously would rather die than include in any Windoze distribution. Instead, they put in their own crippleware "Microsoft Client for NetWare".

With NetWare v6 and its "Native File Access" features, it is no longer necessary to install a client software on workstations for them to access most NetWare-based services.

But I'd like to point out that NFS is pretty crippling if you have users with the same name in different contexts within eDirectory - especially if they are roamers who might come into an office and try to log into the server there.

At that point .jdoe.redmond.acme is going to have problems with .jdoe.phoenix.acme account if he tries to log into the Phoenix server while visiting from Redmond.

NFS on the Phoenix server will try to log him in as the Phoenix JDoe.

Besides, if you think you don't have to install a client to use a Windows computer on a Windows network, you are wrong - there is a Windows client too (it's just usually pre-installed by the OS setup - but it's removable, which means if the computer didn't have it installed, you'll have to install it anyways).

My point:  Use the Novell NetWare Client32 - it has features that you'll want anyways.
